Obama Up 14 in NYT/CBS Poll

That’s just an enormous lead in a two-candidate field. Of course other national polling has things closer than that and one would probably do well to look at an average of polls (Pollster.com has Obama up by 8.5) but to even be anywhere closer to the range of a 14 point win is striking.

MattY: that’s very impressive, but I was reading recently in the paper something even more impressive. Food production in NKorea is up a whopping 34%! The harvest has been a success, and will soon be distributed to the grateful people of the country, unless of course the Yankee Oppressors block shipments or something. But, don’t worry about that! The future looks great!

P.S. If someone takes my advice and gets a good video, how many percentage points do you think BHO would drop in one day?

See How to Defeat Barack Obama for the details.

  2. Dave Weigel Says:

Lonewacko, somebody actually DID take a viral Obama video – that video from a rope line that shows Obama telling a voter that he wants to raise taxes to “spread the wealth around.” The result has been… uh… well, Obama’s continued to rise in the polls.

  3. theCoach Says:

Now that I think about it, who needs 60 in the Senate? If we get it, great, if not nuculer option that the Republicans were so fond of just a short while ago.
The time to be afraid of GOP noise machine pushback is done.

(Not that I think this will happen, but it would be good strategery.)

  4. A.B. Says:

The article says Nader is at 3% How? Who? Why? WTF?

  5. Ed Marshall Says:

I know it’s a complete waste of human sympathy to try and get in the blogwhore’s head but I remember being that guy in 2002. Sucks to be you, blogwhore, it sucks to lose.

  6. Ed Marshall Says:

The article says Nader is at 3% How? Who? Why? WTF?

Eh, why not at this point.

I was seriously considering throwing a vote for Cynthia McKinney since I live in a blue lock. Maybe it get’s the green party national funds, and it’s a dagger to scare Obama out of stupid ideas. I’m not going to do it because I want this thing to be such a landslide, that I hear the media talk about how the republicans need to be careful not to lose “Obama Republicans” with crazy conservative bullshit. I can see someone feeling a different way.

  7. Tyro Says:

You know, strangely, in the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister is recorded on television fielding a constant barrage of hostile questions on the floor of the House of Commons. It does not seem to in any way affect his poll standing, and there’s no “Matlock moment” where he breaks down. You know why? Because politicians are more competent than that. Look, blogwhore, just because you would break down into tears when someone asks you a “tough question,” doesn’t mean that seasoned politicians would. (Palin, on the other hand— she’s a different story)

  8. Michael Smith Says:

Don’t weigh this poll too heavily. The NYT website description of how the poll was conducted makes it seem pretty flawed. Anytime you see the word “reweighted” in a poll, you have to throw out what they claim to be their margin of error.

  9. Ed Marshall Says:

Don’t weigh this poll too heavily.

That’s not bad advice, but there are seven national polls that show Obama with a double-digit lead. We’ve moved into bandwagon effect territory.

  10. 24AheadDotCom Says:

Is that the real Dave Weigel or one of his imposters? If the real one, how many sockpuppets on this site are yours? Have you ever even once in your entire professional career (such as it is) asked someone who has power a disconcerting question? (LarrySinclair doesn’t count)

As for the plumber video, it got a lot of views, but that’s not what I’m referring to. I’m not surprised that Weigel can’t figure that out.

What I’m referring to something more approaching a cross examination, a question asked by someone who intentionally sets out to make BHO look bad and show him to be a liar and an empty suit. A question that calls BHO on his lies and puts him on the spot. That’s something that no “reporter” has the guts to do, because they know what would happen: they’d get fired for doing their job.

Our entire political system is suffering because politiians are not asked the questions they should be asked. We’re devolving into an authoritarian state, and the readers of this site should take a close look at those who are doing their part to help that along.

Fuck you, buddy. Take a good long look at what you did. I don’t even have words for it. Fuck you with a garden rake.

  12. Ed Marshall Says:

Fuck you with a garden rake, at Gitmo, when supreme leader Obaba Hussein Obama, hoods you up and sends you there on a meathook, while we laugh at your pitiful attempts to procure a lawyer.

I know this isn’t going to happen but listening you to you make up shit about “authoritarianism” after what you cheered on just makes me hate the living God out of you.

  13. fletc3her Says:

Wow, so if someone asks Obama the right series of questions and takes his answer out of order and makes a kick ass viral web video then Obama will surely lose.

Question: When was the last time you beat your wife?
Obama: I have never beat my wife and I deplore this politics of personal destruction. What we need is change in Washington which rises about all this mudslinging. My grandmother raised me you know …
Edit: I have … beat my wife

Superimpose a picture of Willie Horton and you’ve got viral smear gold! Yeah, that’s all McCain needs. Fling more poo.

  14. 24AheadDotCom Says:

I forgot to add a couple examples of what I’m talking about for the lurkers. If I ever got to debate BHO about a topic I’m familiar with, he wouldn’t stand much of a chance: link, link.

Here’s the question I tried to ask him almost two years ago:

    24ahead.com/blog/archives/006350.html

And, here’s an example of me stumping a Beltway hack (that was before Youtube got popular):

    24ahead.com/blog/archives/004082.html

And, here’s me trying to ask a former foreign minister of a country a question:

    24ahead.com/blog/archives/005696.html

It was after that I realize that questions asked in such settings had to be self-contained, so that those questioned couldn’t wiggle out of them; see the link in my first question for links to questions like that.

  15. Ed Marshall Says:

Don’t give the silly asshat who can’t form a proper link any hits. I really enjoy checking out the traffic reports and watching my dead ass blog that I haven’t done anything with in five years get 75% of his attention with him pimping the thing 24/7.

  16. bubba Says:

14 points is great, but what I haven’t heard much at all about is an explanation of where the remainder lies. All of these polls that have Obama 50-40 or whatever.. that’s just not how an election happens, Libertarians and Greens aren’t filling that kind of gap. So what exactly explains this?? Is that the quiet racist? the disgruntled Republican who will vote McCain anyway? or the one who will stay home on Nov 4? Plus 8, 14 whatever is great, but that is not how the election will turn out. McCain will not have that margin unless Obama goes way over 50, so what explains this and why should we be excited now by an undetermined lead?

  17. Ed Marshall Says:

All of these polls that have Obama 50-40 or whatever…that’s just not how an election happens

If your guy has 50 over, it doesn’t matter how things fall out on the other side. He won. This is just polling anyway, if this is how the polling goes, the real life effect is a landslide.

  18. TH Says:

Was going to respond but E.M. got it. If he’s got 53%, who the fuck cares how “other” votes?

  19. Thomas Says:

This poll sounds great and all but whats the sampling size for Dems and Repubs? For african americans?

  20. Ed Marshall Says:

This poll sounds great and all but whats the sampling size for Dems and Repubs? For african americans?

    Find the side-tabs.

Throw this poll in the toilet if you feel like. I was going to produce a list of the rest of nationwide polls that have a decades long provable accuracy (including this one), but for once I’m going to advantage you being silly and pretending this is still a contest, over me being right about everything. Being right is fun, but watching the right rats not know when to jump ship is more fun.

  21. El Cid Says:

What a douchebag. He thinks he’s big sh*t because he asked Jorge Castañeda a question, and then did one of his bullsh*t “Mexican conspiracy” interpretations.

I asked Jorge Castañeda questions too, once. He was one of the feckless ‘liberals’ convinced that while NAFTA was wrong, and probably harmful, he had a big fantasy of what some new & improved NAFTA might be like even though no such thing was on the table, and the actual NAFTA vote was coming up, so I told him this was fundamentally stupid.

Our real world choice at the time was either NAFTA or not NAFTA, and instead he wanted to keep spreading fantasy bullsh*t about how if we passed this one maybe Superman would come and get all 3 countries to work with Rainbow Brite to make liberals happy again.

…and once again douchebag is a douchebag. It’s mostly a translation error. Castañeda used the term “militant”. In Spanish and in Mexico it mostly means “activist”. So Castañeda is predicting that activists in U.S. immigrant communities may, you know, do political stuff.

Douchebag instead pulls another bullsh*t Mexican conspiracy out of his a** with ‘OMG I haz caught a Mexican sayin’ there’ll be a militant movement within Amurka!

That’s probably true, but then, Obama isn’t likely to be called upon to debate you about internet trolling tactics.

Wow, this comment thread has become an off-topic mess.

All I wanted to say was: Pollster.com? Seriously? They’re total slowpokes. It’s all about 538. Or at the very least use RCP for averaged numbers. While they obviously lean rightward, at least they update their numbers a hell of a lot faster than Pollster.com.

  25. 24AheadDotCom Says:

MattY gets such charming commenters, doesn’t he? Let me correct one thing above: it’s pretty clear that JorgeC said his “militant” quote in English; he was speaking to a TX business group IIRC.

Interesting side note: JulianSanchez claimed to be a JorgeC student.
