New Transit Proposal

SuperShuttle drivers in the DC area ought to be able to get from Dulles Airport to Georgetown University without getting a whole van full of people badly lost. Just saying. Thanks to my trusty USB 720 I can do some backseat blogging, but honestly I’d rather get home. It’s late!

Ugh. DC SuperShuttle drivers are the worst, combine that with DC airport traffic and you’re in hell. Still, could’ve been worse, you weren’t flying into BWI.

  2. myglesias Says:

BWI –> Matt’s house is a shorter drive than Dulles –> Matt’s house.

  3. njbunk Says:

Amen to that Crusty Dem. I fly into BWI all the time and have to take the SuperShuttle to Georgetown. The drive takes longer than the flight from Boston.

  4. Mixner Says:

Once ZipCar starts offering one-way rentals between Dulles and the District, you’ll be able to drive yourself.

  5. Crusty Dem Says:

I’ve had that experience, too njbunk. In fact, I once had a ride from downtown -> BWI that took nearly as long as a drive from BWI -> Boston.

  6. rea Says:

  7. exiledinLA Says:

njbunk: too bad the g-town set fought the Metro so hard for so long. i know the BWI->amtrak->Metro connection isn’t ideal, but at least it would be a competing option to super shuttle if Metro went there.

  8. CarolBG Says:

I’ve given up on SuperShuttle, sad to say. It used to be a great service, but is now just too unreliable. I have a great deal of patience, but I can’t tolerate paying for gross incompetence and mismanagement – even when it comes real cheap.

  9. mainstreet Says:

I once called an cab to pick me up from Brooklyn and take me to LaGuardia. Once all the luggage had been put in the trunk and I was comfortably lodged in the backseat, the driver turned around, smiled sheepishly, and said:

“Excuse me, ma’am. You’ll have to give me some help with how to get to this airport.”

I felt bad for the guy. If you don’t know where LaGuardia is, your future as an NY cab driver is looking pretty bleak.

  10. samiam4285 Says:

I agree with CarolBG, I can’t stand the SuperShuttle. I just take the 5A bus from Dulles to Rosslyn, and then take the Metro Connection bus to Georgetown. Or, I fly into DCA and just take the Metro to Rosslyn :-)

Also, SuperShuttle to BWI is just not fun any way you slice it.

  11. paul product Says:

Matt — Not sure what you mean about BWI being a shorter drive from your house than Dulles. On paper, the distance is close, but Dulles is closer by a couple miles, and more importantly, it generally takes less time. BWI involves not only 10 miles of rather choked surface arteries, but also the mess of 95 and the beltway.

But for you, the real reason to stick with Supershuttle from Dulles, is that, while you’re waiting for the van driver to show up at Dulles, you get to check out all the transit porn — the nifty new Airtrain cars on display at the airport (due to be installed sometime around 2037, I think).

  12. Tyro Says:

When I first moved here, I was warned about the danger of the SuperShuttle. Most other places seem to be able to pull off the airport shuttle van in a perfectly competent manner. Why can’t DC?

  13. Njorl Says:

That’s wierd. I’ve had tons of problems with DC traffic, but the airports have always been trouble free. Zip in, zip out – BWI, National, Dulles – doesn’t matter. Compared to N. Virginia or Georgetown the airports are a pleasant drive in the country. The worst was Bethesda during the building boom in the late 80s. It was before mapquest and all the printed maps were wrong.

  14. Ethel-To-Tilly Says:

From Matt’s house to BWI is straight out NY Ava and up the BW Parkway (dedicated to Gladys Noon Spellman – who was pretty awesome back in the day)- 40-45 minutes tops. Much easier than getting to Dulles.

  15. ajw_93 Says:

What Ethel said! (I was just about to start typing that). It’s how I get there from my own house in Alex. as well. Faster to cross the bridge and go through town than deal with the Beltway. Of course, I don’t go there any more because the only destination I ever travelled to from BWI was my mom’s house but now that air travel is such a PITA I just drive. The drive is six hours flat — just about the same length as a flight, even though time in the air is only about 75 mins. (I have been known to pick up and drop off there though!)

Back OT: SuperShuttle got lost? WTF? Was he asleep? Toked up? Dulles to Georgetown is pretty much: Exit the airport, go straight for 35 miles, take the next-to-last exit, turn Left, then left again, you’re there. I’ve never taken it, thank heavens.

  16. Mac G Says:

Toll Road to 66 to Key Bridge is not difficult.

  17. mark Says:

I have never taken a SuperShuttle, but it’s a joke with my girlfriend that when I see them on the road I consider them the Enemy. Every single one of them seems to drive as if they’re stoned. Every single one.

  18. Leee Says:

Hope that part of town isn’t on the wrong side of the tracks!

  19. Marshall Says:

Why don’t you just take the Metro from IAD ?

No, wait, I know ! It’s because the blasted extension has been under discussion since, what, 1978 ? And contruction is still supposed to start “soon.”

For more transit porn, here is the route map.
