Washington Post takes a look at Senator Mitch McConnell’s effort to keep his seat. That this race is even remotely close is remarkable. Kentucky’s a solidly conservative state and also one whose demographics are very much tilted against Barack Obama. And McConnell’s leadership position in the GOP ought to give him a leg up. But it seems, perhaps, that using that leadership position to get Senate Republicans to react to 2006 by binding themselves even more tightly to the agenda of an unpopular incumbent president wasn’t such a hot idea.

I have no idea why it’s close. If you stripped away the party labels, you’d peg Lunsford as a Republican. It’s an “interesting” race because of eventual caucus numbers, not ideology. I don’t even know if you could count on Lunsford to toe the line on cloture votes.

I’m sure it’s mostly the economy, but I think another factor is the military. My baby brother was in the 101st Airborne, stationed at Fort Campbell. He got out, finally after two extended tours in Iraq that included a stop-loss. He used to be a republican but now he’s gangbusters for Obama, as is every last one of his army buddies. They are so angry what the government has done to them, and the guys still enlisted are terrified McCain will attack Iran. So I think the military vote in Kentucky, as well as places like North Carolina and Virginia, may actually be hurting McCain. Not to mention how much they hate Palin.

I wonder if the McCain push in Pennsylvania is not about McCain’s chances at all, since he’s almost certainly a goner now, and it’s really about coercing Obama and the DNC into spending time and money in a state they’ve already won and where there are no Senate seats up for grabs so they don’t instead opt for a last week blitz to get to 60+ senators.

Sen. McConnell has never lost a political race in KY. He has beaten some damn good Democrats over the years.
It would be a terrible blow to him if he was finally beaten by Bruce Lunsford, of all people.
Back in 2003, Mr. Lunsford ran in the Democratic governor’s primary against Ben Chandler. He spent millions of dollars on nasty ads against Mr. Chandler & was beaten soundly by Mr. Chandler. The problem was, his nasty ads hurt Mr. Chandler considerably in his race against Ernie Fletcher (they had low-info voters convinced that Ben Chandler & Paul Patton (disgraced Democratic governor at time) were great buddies, when they actually hated each other’s guts). Mr. Lunsford then endorsed Mr. Fletcher in the general election & served on his transition team.
So, progressive voters in KY don’t really like Mr. Lunsford at all. However, we hate Mitch McConnell more & I will be voting for Mr. Lunsford (even though I swore a solemn oath to never vote for him).
That said, I will be surprised if Mr. Lunsford is able to pull it off. He has to be somewhat competetive in Northern KY (can’t lose up there 70 – 30).
