Here’s a chilling thought from John McCain’s NPR interview:
NPR: Given what you’ve said Senator, is there an occasion where you could imagine turning to Governor Palin for advice in a foreign policy crisis.
MCCAIN: I’ve turned to her advice many times in the past, I can’t imagine turning to Senator Obama or Senator Biden cuz they’ve been wrong, they were wrong about Iraq, wrong about Russia…
NPR: But would you turn to Governor Palin?
MCCAIN: I certainly wouldn’t turn to them, and I’ve already turned to Governor Palin particularly on energy issues and I’ve appreciated her background and knowledge on that and many other issues.
NPR: Does her energy qualification extend to the international energy market?
MCCAIN: Of course. Of course. That’s what it’s all about. It extends to a broad variety of issues from her worldview to threats that we face, to radical Islamic extremism, to specific areas of the world. I’m very proud of her, and proud of the knowledge and background that she has.
Now my guess is that McCain is lying here and comes by his wrongheaded ideas about national security policy all on his own. Still, it does make you wonder.

McCain said “cuz”?
October 1st, 2008 at 11:38 am
Wrong about Russia? He’s just saying stuff now, isn’t he?
October 1st, 2008 at 11:41 am
Translation:
I’ve told her what to say on various foreign policy issues, and even though it usually comes back from her garbled, I know what she is supposed to be saying and I agree with that.

I wonder if he’ll turn to her when appointing new Supreme Court members, considering her extensive knowledge of Constitutional law.
(Actually, that suggests a great, genuine gotcha-type question. “Senator McCain, who would you first turn to when considering appointments to the Supreme Court: Senator Obama or Governor Palin?”)
October 1st, 2008 at 11:46 am
The transcriber should have written that as ’cause or even because, not cuz.
October 1st, 2008 at 11:47 am
And even on energy, what does she know beyond oil and natural gas???
October 1st, 2008 at 11:51 am
Is Katie Couric the only journalist in America who is allowed to say, “Can you give us a specific example?”
In the Des Moines Register interview, McCain claimed polls proved that Americans agree with the wisdom of the Palin selection. Why, why, why could they not have followed up? “Which polls are you referring to, Senator?”
Perhaps one of the only rationales for journalism to exist is to pursue the follow up line of inquiry. Otherwise, let’s cut out the middleman–just let the campaigns pass out their brochures and be done with it.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:06 pm
I dunno, it would explain the ludicrous response to the Georgia crisis.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:06 pm
He also said in the same interview that John Kennedy and Barry Goldwater agreed to have town meetings together. Could he have misspoken again since JFK was killed in ‘63? America breathlessly awaits his campaign’s answer.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:07 pm
he’d only met her twice before selecting her, so what in the world is he talking about?
October 1st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Wow. just, wow.
“..in the past..”? He’s only known her, what, a month?
Now she’s a long time advisor?
October 1st, 2008 at 12:16 pm
I was about to write, ‘I thought he’d only met her twice before he picked her’, but Howard beat me to it…
but he’s on record as saying that, isn’t he?
So we have another flip-flop?
gosh
what a surprise…
October 1st, 2008 at 12:17 pm
I find it odd that he constantly says “I’m proud of her.” Is he her father? It sounds like he is referring to his mentally challenged daughter.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:17 pm
“MCCAIN: I’ve turned to her advice many times in the past.”
Huh? I thought he barely knew her and had only meet her a couple of times before choosing her for VP
This is an obvious lie that could have easily been challenged by the “journalist” asking for a few examples. Sheezh!
October 1st, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Palin is aware of all magazines and periodicals.
McCain- Sarah, can you look out your window and tell me if there are any Commies setting up missile launchers?
October 1st, 2008 at 12:29 pm
“It extends… to radical Islamic extremism”
Sarah P. claims she doesn’t belong to a church so I assume she is Muslim. She speaks like she knows a few radicals.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:34 pm
I’ve heard this “I’m very proud of her” a couple of times the the last few days. Do we ever hear Obama say he’s proud of Biden? Or Bush of Cheney? It’s paternal and patronizing. A defensive stance.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I call bullshit.
btw, Even O’Reilly has admitted that Obama was right about not invading Iraq.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Dude, I’m with ya, but I’m just sayin’, be careful with your tax status.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:46 pm
NPR: But would you turn to Governor Palin?
MCCAIN: I certainly wouldn’t turn to them, and I’ve already turned into Governor Palin….in the way I answer questions from reporters.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:47 pm
rorycalhoun,
I recall that Kennedy did actually agree to the townhalls before the assassination, though I could be wrong.
October 1st, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Why wouldn’t you turn to someone who reads every newspaper? Someone who is the All-Seer, the All-Knower? That just seems like common sense.

Now, I don’t see McCain ever turning to Obama for advice as he hates him (or Palin, my dog wouldn’t turn to her for advice) but I am pretty sure they may have been a time or two he asked Biden, who is always being called his good friend, for advice.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Even if he wins, the Dems will still hold majority in both houses. Which means Biden stays on as chair the Foreign Relations committee. Are we to believe that on an issue of foreign policy, a President McCain would not seek the input of a Senate official who is widely regarded as one of America’s foremost experts in the field? That’s madness. And for someone who talks so much about “reaching across the aisle”, stubbornly refusing to consult with the person who is widely regarded as the future of the opposition party should force onlookers to question McCain’s ability to achieve anything should he rise to CIC. Insulting Barack Obama riles up McCain’s base, but it does not win votes, and it would only make a McCain presidency more difficult. What is he playing at? Is anyone driving the Straight Talk Express?
October 1st, 2008 at 1:26 pm
This is just like the interview with Bible Spice.
Q. what newspapers do your read?
A. all of ‘em!
Q. ever asked Caribou Barbie about foreign affairs
A. sure! tons of times!
Specific examples are obviously not mavericky.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:27 pm
The thing that really gets me here is the arrogance. Other campaign or not, he’s the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and generally acknowledged to be pretty well-versed in foreign policy issues. McCain really “can’t imagine” turning to him for advice? It’s like he honestly believes that John McCain, and anyone who he deigns to allow aboard the Straight Talk Express, are literally the only people qualified to even think about world affairs.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:34 pm
I, John McCain, would ask Sarah Palin for advice about international issues, but not Joe Biden, the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
That doesn’t come within 1000 miles of passing the laugh test. It doesn’t worry me, because it’s so obviously untrue.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:35 pm
I believe McCain said that he’s never ever lied and he’s been 100% truthful in this campaign, so take him at his word, he’s getting advice on foreign policy from Palin. Makes me tingly!
October 1st, 2008 at 1:37 pm
McCain-Palin are LIARS, HYPOCRITES and FRAUDS.
McCain-Palin are LIARS, HYPOCRITES and FRAUDS.
McCain-Palin are LIARS, HYPOCRITES and FRAUDS.
McCain-Palin are LIARS, HYPOCRITES and FRAUDS.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:45 pm
I heard this while driving this morning….good thing I didn’t crash from laughing so hard! I would never ever turn to Obama or McCain?! haha! He could turn to me then, since I’m more qualified than Palin! haha! He can’t really believe the words coming out of his own mouth, it’s just not possible!
October 1st, 2008 at 1:46 pm
correction to above…I meant Biden NOT McCain…sorry…I still am laughing at that interview!
October 1st, 2008 at 1:54 pm
…that should be emperors of course…
October 1st, 2008 at 1:55 pm
There are many reasons why the Republicans are simply unfit to rule, but their increasing tendency to insist that the naked emperor (first Shrub, now Mooselini) are clothed is definitely a clincher.
October 1st, 2008 at 1:56 pm
I would bet a large sum of money that McCain has asked Biden for foreign policy advice more times than he’s asked Palin.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Wow Susan, did you anticipate the error you would make in the future and post a correction in advance? How awesome!
October 1st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
She doesn’t what the Foreign Ralations Committee is but she has more executive experience than Obama and Joe Biden combined.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:24 pm
It’s funny that McCain is always saying how “proud” he is of Palin’s knowledge and achievements, like he’s her daddy. The Palin pick still amazes me. What is heaven’s name could this strange man be thinking.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Jim and Michael J: I was thinking just the same thing. His patronizing attitude towards her is creepy. It suggests he’s uncomfortable in general in working with women. In fact, out of curiosity, when has McCain had a strong working relationship with a woman during his political career?
October 1st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Randy Newman’s song “A Few Words in Defense of Our Country” has an apt word or two here:
Let’s turn history’s pages, shall we?
October 1st, 2008 at 6:02 pm
One point I have to concede to him — before he picked her as VP, I’m pretty sure Palin was never wrong about foreign policy. (That’s because there’s not much evidence she ever thought about it, but still…)
October 1st, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Having listened to this interview on the NPR website, I’m struck by how much McCain is starting to sound like Palin. There’s been a lot of discussion about how Palin is not improving but is in fact getting worse. I haven’t seen much discussion as to how McCain is getting worse as the campaign progresses. That interview wasn’t just disagreeable, it was incomprehensible. I can’t even figure out what points he is trying to make.
