Perhaps I should have read the rules, but I wasn’t aware that Tom Brokaw was picking the questions to be asked.
Does anyone believe that Brokaw, McCain’s NBC liason, wouldn’t pick questions tilted towards McCain’s strengths? Why doesn’t Brokaw just read the questions he picked & cut out the middle man? Doesn’t that make the people in attendance just props?
Within the first half-hour, Brokaw has (sternly) chastised Obama for going overtime & cut him off once to let McCain respond (before the time was up).
Brokaw is not only still on the tire swing, he’s firmly seatbelted in.
Brokaw refuses to let Obama respond to McCain’s untruthful charges because of the “rules”, but then goes to say the rules are “loose”, so he (Brokaw) will ask his own question…
i love you partisan shills, so lame, so predictable. obama is a politician, narcissistic, self interested and full of shit. just like mccain. just like all of ‘em. cracks me up that you’re dumb enough to think that one is “the good guy” LMMFAO
Matt–I’m not registered at Think Progress, but, just reading the live blog, one might conclude that John McCain is giving a speech…only 3 of the numberous posts directly refer to something Obama has said. What gives?????????
I live-blogged part of it, but I’ve mostly given up because this is one of the worst “debates” I’ve seen in a while.
Speaking about Russia, this debate is almost like something you would have seen on Soviet Union TV. A stiff of a moderator asking extremely lightweight, general questions that simply allow the candidates to give their stock speeches.
MattY and many other people know about this plan, but they have no intention of supporting it because to them fake debates are better than real debates because real debates would reveal all the flaws in their policies.
Sweet. As a fitting close to McCain’s performance, he wanders (confused?) into the camera’s line-of-sight, obscuring Brokaw as he was making his closing remarks. McCain had to be led off in the right direction.
Could something like that be put on? Yes, very easily and fairly cheaply (around $10k).
OK, would something like that solve the identified problems with the “debates” so far. Yes, as long as no one tries to put their thumb on the scale. As long as experts from across the spectrum were allowed to “cross-examine” the candidates or their surrogates, it would definitely avoid things like we’ve just seen: the candidates simply replaying their stock speeches.
So, the bottom line is that my proposed format would solve the problems that MattY complains about.
Then, the question becomes, why won’t he and his various employers and friends support it?
The answer to that is fairly clear: they know that the debates would work.
Right now they’ve got a sweet deal: “debates” like the ones we just saw allow BHO to fool millions of people, and at the same time ThinkProgress gets traffic by complaining about the “debates”. Sweet for them, not so sweet for the American people.

Mccain is gasping for air as he walks around. Does he have asthma or is just about to die?

WTF?
Brokaw refuses to let Obama respond to McCain’s untruthful charges because of the “rules”, but then goes to say the rules are “loose”, so he (Brokaw) will ask his own question…

Huh. Brokaw allows McCain to respond to an Obama charge outside of debate ‘rules’. Brokaw earlier denied Obama a similar opportunity.

Why won’t you advocate 24AheadDotCom’s pet projects Matt? Is it because you love the old Soviet Union?

Maybe MattY would care to jump back in here and have a grown-up discussion about this.
MattY complains about debates being bad. Yet, MattY hasn’t come up with any recommendations to fix the format.
Meanwhile, I have a plan for real debates.
So, let’s evaluate that plan.
Could something like that be put on? Yes, very easily and fairly cheaply (around $10k).
