Delaware, Are You Aware?

I was a bit surprised, in light of his running mate, to hear Barack Obama making reference to Delaware’s lax regulatory environment. But I think it’s a good pretext to repost my Joe Biden / Promise Ring mashup video:

Just saying.

Hell, why shouldn’t he reference Delaware? Delaware’s laws are the responsibility of the Delaware Legislature, not the US Senate. The issue of registering corporations in DE isn’t a secret.

  2. pickandroll Says:

As chairman of the telecom and energy committees, McCain ofte talked about the sound of the phone outside of texaco, from bell south down to a southern bell.

  3. Andrew Says:

I heartily approve of this Promise Ring reference. That’s such a fantastic album.

Except that Delaware corporate law has been established by generations of precedent in the Delaware courts, and any reform of Delaware law would be the responsibility of said courts, the Delaware state legislature and/or the governor of Delaware. The United States Senate and Joe Biden have nothing to do with it.

You can no more tie Joe Biden to this than you could tie Barack Obama to the latest pay to play scandal at Chicago city hall or John McCain to a misguided local ordinance put forth by the Scottsdale city council. Which is why McCain didn’t even try.

  5. Gavin Says:

I thought banks preferred to set themselves up in North Carolina, because the legal environment there makes it difficult to sue banks.

  6. Jim Crozier Says:

I thought it was clever politics. It served two purposes:

    1. If you’re going to criticize a state, then criticize one that you have no chance of losing.

    2. It was a subtle way to show Obama will criticize the left and “take on corruption”.

  7. Jay Levitt Says:

    Obligatory DC-area joke:

    Delaware? That’s in Maryland, right?

  8. Kirsten Says:

I am impressed you know this song. Bringing back sacred memories of speeding around Cape Ann in high school, feeling alive. Props.

  9. John LaCroix Says:

yes, good choice of song. They used to stay at my house when the played Boston. It was a sweet time.
