The AT&T signal quality inside the Flophouse is deplorable and the situation at my new place is, if anything, even worse. Too bad I don’t chair the committee that regulates telecom firms, if I did I might be able to get them to install a special cell tower just for me.

I know people who swear by ATT but it’s never worked well for me indoors in the District. Part of why I can’t have an iPhone.

I love that the first comment on the thread is actually bitching about AT&T rather than remarking on the McCain’s private cell tower.

Getting rural coverage is a problem?
“The McCains went through the process that is available to anybody who subscribes to one of these cell phone companies to inquire about getting service.”
Not only that, I can call a Senator’s office whenever I want, just like Robert Woods Johnson IV.

VERIZON

From Ambinder
Verizon Denies Post Story…
The Washington Post story regarding Verizon providing a cell tower to the McCain Ranch is wrong. Verizon received a request from Mrs. McCain, but declined. Subsequent to that, the Secret Service made a legitimate request for a temporary tower for its work and Verizon complied as is required by our contract with the agency. The Secret Service request, made on May 28, specifically said it needed the service urgently and requested that Verizon “explore every possible means of providing an alternative cellular or data communications source in the referenced area and provide any short term implementation of any type as a solution
in the interim.”

Sorry, I am just totally not surprised to find powerful companies falling over themselves to toady the rich and powerful. (I am also completely unsurprised to find rich people improving their lot by demanding that they be given things that only they could afford to purchase). I am, however, continually surprised by ATT’s inability, year after year, to deliver normal-quality mobile phone service to the capital of the wealthiest nation in the world.

That’s funny. I’ve been through that process with three companies now. The difference is that I still get really crappy coverage. That the process is available is nice. But it would be nicer to get service without having to be a Senator. Maybe I should try that route though. I surely have a better chance at being elected to the Senate than I have at getting any phone company to care about me. And I’m willing to meet them halfway. I’m willing to pay half my bill if they give me service half the time. They don’t really meet the half time standard, but unfortunately, I still have to pay the full bill. I guess I need to run for the Senate.

I just installed a cell reception booster at my apartment from a company called Wi-Ex. Got it for $300 on Amazon. My apartment went from zero bars to full signal.

McCain’s blinking is terrifying me.

yeah? How much would they charge me a month, if I could talk them into it and how much do they charge mccain?

Do you and Karen Tumulty live in the same place?
October 16th, 2008 at 1:15 am
Hey Matt,
Larry’s right –a femtocell will solve your problem (and mine!) Guess mccain needed a bigger gun!
Word on the street is that AT&T signed a deal with these guys:
ip.access
Let’s hope! Part of our ongoing trendline towards 3rd world-dom is our crap telecoms networks. Remember (hey it was only 5 or 10 years ago) when we lead the world in telecom ?
(finally a topic here that I actually can speak with some authority on)

Be careful what you wish for. There’s a Verizon tower literally on top of my building, but for some reason, the inside of my apartment is a dead zone directly under the tower. You want the cell phone tower on the next building over.
