Conservative Senators for Social Security Privatization

sununu1.jpg

Pat Garofalo takes a look at John Sununu’s support for Social Security privatization. And he’s not the only one! Mitch McConnell discussed his passion for privatizing Social Security at some length on Meet The Press back in 2005. Saxby Chambliss? He’s a privatizer, too. Roger Wicker’s record is a bit less clear, at least to my Google, but he has a meager 10 percent rating from the Alliance for Retired Americans.

What about knowledgeable folks like Will Wilkinson who are also for privitization? not that I am but when smart people lay it out it can be persuasive

  2. Andrew Fly Says:

    Here’s a quote from WW.

If you can show me one wealthy liberal democracy that has recently reformed their old age pension system to look more like the one we have and less like the one Bush proposed, I’ll give you $100.

Also, you can find me very carefully considering the arguments in favor of the current regime in the paper I link to. They are bad arguments. We have a terrible system.

  3. eriks Says:

Can we please get rid of the “privatization” meme? Social Security is a safety-net. With privatization, the program ceases to be a safety net and is instead a risky source of income. It fundamentally transforms the program to something it was never intended to be. Privatizers are against Social Security, not for privatizing.

  4. Evil Twin Says:

Sorry, no Will Wilkinson, seems to be a particularly poorly informed commentator on the topic of Social Security. He addresses none of the basic flaws in converting to a strictly gambling system (the market) and laughably claims that “Interest on lots of checking accounts beats the average rate of return for SS.” His ability to will away the costs of a “private” plan (which must include government tracking of all of your accounts) and his desire to have the government re-allocate your funds as your retirement draw near make his plan laughably inept.

This isn’t a smart person talking about Social Security, this is someone with a little knowledge and a big chip on his shoulder.

Basically me, but less informed and wrong.

  9. Hancock Says:

It’s about time. I do better with my own money. Knowing my family will be taken care of. The social sercuity thing does not work. I have plenty of family members that worked all their lives and did not get their hard earned money back. It’s wrong! The gov.has been gambling with our money for to long. The people should be in control not the gov.
