Breakthroughs

Brad DeLong calls our attention to the fact that Bobby May is part of the McCain-Palin Virginia Leadership Team, and Treasurer of the Buchanan County (VA) Republican Party. And also author of a pamphlet claiming that Barack Obama favors “Mandatory Black Liberation Theology classes,” would make Al Sharpton Secretary of State, would “hire rapper Ludacris” to paint the White House black,” wants to increase US development assistance so that unnamed African relatives of Obama’s can “skim off enough to allow them to free their goats,” would make Palestine an American state, and change the national anthem to “‘The Black National Anthem’ by James Weldon Johnson.”

As I said yesterday I think we should expect to see a lot more of this kind of this kind of thing if Obama wins the election.

If this is being reported accurately (not as satire or sacrcasm) it’s so dumb I can’t imagine even hicks in the sticks would fall for it. It’s about the level of Paris Hilton’s “campaign ad” where she joked she was going to paint the White House pink– but we all knew that was a joke. The GOP is not even grasping at straws with this– they’re grasping at the hallucinations of straws.

  2. joejoejoe Says:

Q: When you say “we should expect to see a lot more of this kind of this kind of thing” do you mean more of it will exist or that the racism that currently exists will be more obvious? More racism is bad. More exposure of existing racism will be good if it provokes (as it should) the kind of reaction that ended up beating the Ku Klux Klan back from being a major political player into a fringe joke. Are you saying Matt Yglesias is going to do more reporting like Dave Neiwert or are you saying there will be more news on Dave Neiwert’s beat?

  3. 24AheadDotCom Says:

While the PDF is definitely racially-tinged and may in some places step over the line, surely MattY doesn’t think that May was serious when he said that BHO would confiscate all weapons from the U.S. military and replace them with pea shooters. Right? Could someone please confirm that, because I actually think there’s the strong possibility that MattY thinks May was serious about that. Could this be yet another case where MattY has confused satire with a serious suggestion?

Note also that the Ludacris line is in the lyrics:
    huliq.com/65376/ludacris-obama-song-lyrics-politics-rap

As for more of what we’ll see, posts like this show how the BHO administration will lead: through intimidation. When anyone criticizes him they’ll play the race card and/or jam the phone lines. The Balkans are calling the Democratic Party home.

  4. Rachel Says:

Painting the White House black would probably help with heating costs.

    Fight anecdotes with anecdotes:

from a dkos diary by an ex-Republican canvassing for Obama in Dallas.

“I have been going out every day for the past two weeks. Early on, my canvassing partner and I ran into two young black men – bling, tattooes, etc. I try not to be racist – but it was all I could do not to be scared to death. They came up to us – and we introduced ourselves. The one gentleman’s name is Kai. I asked Kai if he was registered to vote – he said No and we discussed how he could register. He looked up at me – and I swear he was tearing up in his eyes – he said – “You are the first white man who has ever spoken to me with respect in my life. I appreciate all the work you are doing for Obama.” He then asked for more registration forms – he took about 100.

I understand from a friend at a local official registration location that Kai did indeed show up – with about 50 of his friends in tow. I actually started crying.”

  6. jvoe Says:

I sort of agree with 3Joe.

The Republican’s need to own this shit. Too long it sort of simmered in the black kettle of talk radio, but here it is folks your Republican Southern Strategy. No more hiding, no more “code words”.

Decent people won’t stand for it, and believe me, there are enough decent folks in this country to make them pay for it.

  7. James Wimberley Says:

    Not if, when.

  8. ed Says:

In Bobby May’s defense, he is a Republican.

  9. ed Says:

While the PDF is definitely racially-tinged and may in some places step over the line

Yeah, just a little bit. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, right? Not if you’re a Republican anyway. SOP.

  10. otto Says:

The funny thing is that this sort of thing seems to come out when Obama’s opponents appear to have already effectively lost. Hillary!’s race-mobilisation in the primaries came to the fore when it was clear she was already done for.

  11. brenna Says:

I don’t see how anyone could interpret any of this as anything but blatant racism, whether against blacks or those “dirty a-rabs.”

The whole thing makes me sick. I am ashamed to share my country with these people.

  12. Adam Says:

I love how they can claim on one hand that Obama’s going to skim money from the government to send to his relatives in Kenya, and then also say it’s a moral failing that he has a brother in Kenya that lives on $1 a day that he’s not sending money to.

  13. Voice of Reaon Says:

I know some of you people object to my posts, but a year from now you guys will be more radical than I am now.

Bobby May should be drawn and quartered; yes, I know what that means, and yes I’m serious. We can then mount his head on a pike and display it in front of the capital as a warning to others.

  14. Voice of Reason Says:

    24headdotcom,

I don’t want the government to round up people like you & Bobby May and execute them, because I don’t trust the government with that sort of power, I do, however, want the government to make it legal for patriots like myself to hunt down and execute animals like you. Sadly, I doubt that that is likely to happen.

The only good Republican is a dead Republican.

  15. Jeffrey Davis Says:

The funny thing is that this sort of thing seems to come out when Obama’s opponents appear to have already effectively lost. Hillary!’s race-mobilisation in the primaries came to the fore when it was clear she was already done for.

That’s progress. It used to be racial attacks came early and often. We all remember Stephen Douglas asserting that Lincoln wanted us to marry Negroes. That’s an oldie but a goldie. Holding off on race-baiting until desperation has set in — that’s indicative of a bit of shame. Which I’d thought was dead.

  16. djslippyb Says:

I wish Obama would change the national anthem to Weldon Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, it’s a much better song than the “Star Spangled Banner.”

  17. The Pop View Says:

What’s particularly ridiculous is that if this were true, it would be singer George Clinton who would be hired to paint the White House black.

Although there are some people I know in New York, conservative Democrats, who were explaining to me during the primary that African Americans thought they were going to get some kind of payoff or jobs from the Obama administration. I tried to not react, but I kind of wondered whether they were stupid or if they just thought blacks were that stupid.

  18. djslippyb Says:

“Paint the White House Black” was the title of an awesome go-go compilation I had back in the 80s.

  19. Steve F Says:

Buchanan County (VA) is well known as one of the most racist places in Va. I live about 1 hr away. African american people are openly discouraged from living there. Racism is considered a virtue. People in that county brag about their hatred of people of other races, and what they would like to do to them. So what is being reported is very much in character with many of the people in that county.

  20. Brad A Says:

If you would like to email Bobby May and provide him your thoughts you can reach him at bobbyleemay@yahoo.com

  21. ed Says:

Matt, you oughta ban any and all obviously fake liberal trolls at your earliest convenience. For everybody’s sake.

  22. Don Williams Says:

This is kinda weird. Buchanan County is where I grew up.
    Small world.

I don’t know Bobby May — I’ll have to ask my brother about him. I assume Bobby May was writing in the local newspaper — the Virginia Mountaineer.

Obama needs to get Jesse Jackson to tutor him on campaigning in Appalachia. Back in 1984, Jesse went to the area , looked out on a sea of white faces, and told them he was there for the nigger vote. That he hadn’t seen an area so damm poor –so fucked over by the rich — since he left the ghetto. That he didn’t care how white their skin was, he knew niggers when he saw them and he wanted their support. Actually got a fair number of votes, as I recall.

Jesse scared the shit out of the Democratic leadership with that “class warfare” line — the Rainbow Coalition — and the leadership banded together to kill his his campaign.

The leadership Went with a more “charismatic” figure –Michael Dukakis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Michael_Dukakis_in_tank.jpg

So how did that work out?

  23. Don Williams Says:

Re Steve F’s comment “African american people are openly discouraged from living there. Racism is considered a virtue. People in that county brag about their hatred of people of other races”
    ————
Not exactly. They don’t like ANYONE from the flatlands.
After all, it’s kinda stupid to make racial judgements about foreigners from Abington, Virginia or Bluefield or New York City–them being all mixed up and all.

Buchanan County’s unemployment rate was around 35 percent during the Clinton Administration –when the coal business went bust. Although it’s improved recently, I don’t recall a massive mob of outsiders making a push to settle in the County.

  24. Njorl Says:

I would be very upset if Obama hired Ludicris to paint the White House black. He is not a professional painter. He would do a poor job and would probably charge more than good hard-working folk. I hope he hires union painters who use domestically manufactured black paint … and two coats… we don’t want to have to redo it in four years.

  25. Don Williams Says:

One other point: Buchanan County’s median HOUSEHOLD income is around $22,000 — which places it around 85th on the list of 100 poorest counties in the United States.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowest-income_counties_in_the_United_States

Like I said, I don’t imagine there are hordes of African-Americans beating down the door to settle there.

  26. Stephen Says:

It is of course sad to see someone spread such hate, but particularly to see someone do so using the name Bobby May.

The real Bobby May, America’s finest juggler (1907-1981) may be found here:

  27. ajay Says:

Painting the White House black would probably help with heating costs.

No, actually; black objects are better radiators of heat. That’s why you paint radiators, and heatsinks inside computers, matt black…

Well, I kinda hope he’s going to get everyone jobs, black and white–although as f___ed up as the economy is now, it may be the Second Biden Admisntration before Obama’s work pays off . . ..
