Alec Poitevint

Marc Ambinder reports:

Republican party insiders say that operatives close to Sen. John McCain’s campaign are pushing Alec Poitevint, the former state party chairman of Georgia and a member of the Republican National Committee, to run for the RNC chairman’s position.

But if McCain loses, is anyone going to care what operatives close to McCain’s campaign think? McCain wasn’t exactly a hugely popular figure among conservative activists twelve months ago, and political figures rarely make themselves look better by losing.

I find the term operative a bit odd. As opposed to insiders, advisors or supporters. Maybe I’ve missed it but I don’t recall operative being used commonly. It strikes me as an ominous and rather dirty sort of description that implies negativity to the GOP on some fundamental basis. Something new.

What say will McCain have? Especially if he gets his ass kicked. He’ll have none. Besides, as Ambinder even quotes, some say it isn’t a good idea to have a Southerner in this post. They need to break the Southern stranglehold on the party. Besides, the RNC chair isn’t usually beholden to the Fundie base. They have to help raise money from the corporate fat cats.

Did Kerry take a position on who the post-2004 DNC chairman should be? I don’t imagine he backed Dean at all, but did he express an opinion on anyone else?

That actually brings up an even bigger more interesting point: Who is going to be leading the Republican party 4 months from now? Bush is hardly leading it now, and it’s likely that he follows the route of his father in disappearing from the political stage after his presidency is up (unlike Bill Clinton who remains a big dog in the Dem party). That goes even more so for Cheney. The minority leaders of congress just were shown to be totally out of control of their party when they failed to pass the first bail-out. And all the big players in their presidential primary began the race with major in-party opposition to them and now have the “loser” tag hanging on them as well.

If McCain loses, they really don’t have anyone with any kind of respect or authority in the party, do they?

They will if some of those operatives…are Vulcans.

I seriously thought for about ten seconds that this guy was the State Party Chairman from the other Georgia, McCain’s favorite one….seemed plausible enough, you know: mavericky move! win the news cycle…..need more coffee….

  7. EZTempo Says:

Given that McCain hired Karl Rove’s acolytes and has the Phil Graham cabal advising on the economy, YES the Party is going to care what these “operatives” have to say about who is going to be the next RNC Chairman.
