Ah, Cable

I guess a close election would be good for cable news ratings and that explains why every cable network is now broadcasting a Sarah Palin stump speech live, in its entirety, even though ever cable network broadcast an identical Palin stump speech live, in its entirety, just yesterday. Certainly I don’t imagine they’re planning to start extending the same courtesy to Joe Biden.

  1. Mudge Says:

They’ll give Joe some air time if he makes a gaffe.

  2. K Says:

Am I the only person in the world who thinks it’s terrifically tacky for Palin-McCain to not show at least some token deference to Biden’s family’s time of mourning?

  3. steve duncan Says:

Click on MSNBC or CNN and their headline box somewhere on the page will have a line “Palin says Obama is a violent pedophile” or some such nonsense. Whatever comes out of her mouth it’s as if they have some obligation to report it without context, without taking into account the truth of it or the relevance to the election. It’s just “Palin says…..” The body of the article may actually touch on the truth of the claim but there’s the headline “Palin says Obama is the Anti-Christ.” It’s as if the National Enquirer is the new standard for journalistic ethics.WTF?

  4. Rich Says:

Please God, let them run Palin all day on every channel!

  5. hubcap Says:

Well, Palin does pull in traffic. I mean, even on lefty blogs the Plain posts have 2-3x the comments as non-Palin posts. In this case I think cable is mostly just giving people what they want.

  6. toby Says:

Well over 50% of the blogs on Palin are critical of her, some of them extremely so.

Where is the critical coverage on cable news? Isn’t it supposed to be balanced, or is that only Fox News?:))

  7. Calvin Jones and the 13th Apostle Says:

Where were you three months ago? We knew back then that the Cable networks needed a close race. A blow-out was unacceptable to them.

  8. Don Williams Says:

Cable news doesn’t like the Fairness Doctrine.

  9. Rob Says:

Keep in mind a big chunk of the cable audience is made up of the Rich Lowrys of the world. And after all you have to pay extra for Cinemax!

  10. egg on egon Says:

maybe they are hoping for a cross burning to break out, and they know what kind of good television that would make…

  11. Jayhawk Max Says:

The Palin campaign is pitching a war against the media – so why continue to cover her? If her supporters want to boo and hiss and throw things at reporters covering her events, I say stop covering her events.

  12. Matthew Says:

After the “terrorist”, “Kill him”, and “Sit down, boy” of the last few days, it’s entirely conceivable that a 3rd rate Klan rally could break out at one of these things.

  13. A Different Matt Says:

Sometimes I don’t think the press understands its own role in society. The press is a top/down management of aggregate perceptions. But perceptions are pretty superficial. Whereas when a candidate has a double digit lead, or near so, that’s not a superficial perception – that’s something deep-rooted. That’s overwhelming favoritism. When the press tries to promote balance in this atmosphere, I’m left wondering why when they’re obviously going to be exposed for the frauds they are. In other words, CNN is going to team Obama saying, “you need us.” Then, after months of contrived “balance,” Obama wins by 12 points in the popular vote and an electoral landslide. What kind of leverage does team Obama have over the cable press after that? It’d be better for them to go in the tank for Obama, make this a 15 point win, and retain some credibility as manipulators of relevance.

  14. steve duncan Says:

The press won’t cease covering her BS. It’s like a BMW lodged beneath the wheels of a dump truck in a construction zone. You HAVE TO look. Can’t help it. Knowing it’s likely a gut wrenching scene of human misery you slow down even more, wanting a REAL GOOD LOOK. Once you’ve passed you think “Damn, I kinda wish I hadn’t seen that.” Palin is a bloody highway disaster.

  15. ferd Says:

    TVocracy.

  16. Braden Says:

But Matt, she says the darnedest things! Did you know she drinks mochas from Starbucks? Now that’s a culture war I can believe in!

  17. rmwarnick Says:

The McCain campaign has finally learned the lesson of Karl Rove. Beat up on journalists and call them names, and you will get the most favorable coverage you ever had. The media are motivated by fear, not favor.

  18. Freedom Fry Says:

They’re probably waiting for her to whip her supporters into a frenzy until they attack the first black person they see. Hell, I’d be watching too.

  19. 55 Says:

Does Sullivan actually think his blog is going to make the dipshits in the MSM demand a press conference? It’s not happening. 45%+ of our stupid nation doesn’t care.

  20. Richard Steven Hack Says:

Matt still doesn’t get it – and never will.

What part of “they want McCain to win” don’t you get, Matt?

I’ve said this over and over here. McCain is going to win because the people in power want him to win. And they own the media – except your sorry ass, and basically given how often you go on Fox, I’d guess you’re in line to be recruited at some point – and like the Joker said, I’m sure you won’t disappoint.
