Newsweek asks that time-honored question, what do women (i.e., most people) want. Jessica Valenti comments that perhaps women want “Not to have articles about their political interests represented by a fucking tube of lipstick.”
One of the stories promoted on the cover, meanwhile, is a great sarcastic piece by Dahlia Lithwick about Sarah Palin’s penchant for hard-right views on cultural issues and proclivity for ignoring the rule of law. It doesn’t, however, have much of anything to do with the subject teased on the cover.

I’m wondering what the iconic representation of maleness on magazine covers should be. A can of shaving cream, maybe? The generally whitish color of shaving cream might not show up very well if used for writing, though.

I cannot believe that is the cover. I hate the frickin’ lipstick and I also hate the “What Women Want” headline. We aren’t one group. If Palin and Clinton have shown us anything, it is that women are not one group who all think or vote alike.

I don’t know what women want, but I’d really appreciate being taken seriously as having an opinion on foreign policy, economics, and national security instead of only my vagina.

Well, great comment from Valenti.
Pretty sure the male equivalent cover is two dudes, each muscular, hands on hips, shirtless, checking each other out (in a Republican, not gay at all way), over the tops of their sunglasses. Nothing says male like two hot men you know, staring each other down.
Hell, I hope they do come up with an analogous cover/story for men, but it always ends up being some angry white male (or timid asian male or angry dangerous black male or … etc) BS.
Media, I love to love you, but you are so childish sometimes.

Matt, don’t be such a dweeb. Women love lipstick.
Grow up and learn to appreciate women for what they are. They’re great. They’re just not like men.
One thing that always amuses me is listening to young nerds complain about how “society” forces women to not be interested in … whatever the nerd happens to be interested in: the Ethiopia-Somalia war, or Grand Theft Auto, or guns, or The Wire, or Clash single B-sides, or whatever. They always phrase it in feminist jargon but they’re just being Henry Higgins and Col. Pickering wondering “Why Can’t a Woman Be More Like a Man?”
