The Washington Independent’s Laura McGann reports from Alaska:
I told [the city clerk of Wasillia] I appreciated her help, since I’m sure she’s been bombarded with requests these last few weeks. The clerk’s office keeps all City Council meeting agendas, minutes, legislation, ordinances, etc. She chuckled. Then she told me that I’m the first person who has asked her office for anything.
I’ve got nothing to say to that.

Hey, this is a guy who graduated at the bottom of his class. Doing his goddamn homework was not a priority then, and it sure isn’t now.
Just what we need, another crap-shooting c-plus Augustus. Atrios quoting Digby is right on. “John McCain is the man George W. Bush was pretending to be, right down to the flight suit.”
Governinging is boring. Barbecue is fun! Tire swings also.

Seems like McCain belting a glass of scotch and yelling “Fuck it, the Alaska woman” might have been giving him too much credit on vetting. Maybe they just showed him a picture and he blinked once for yes.

If she’s really the first, doesn’t that mean Obama’s oppo research team is also dropping the ball?

“John McCain is the man George W. Bush was pretending to be, right down to the flight suit.” Why didn’t you tell Bush that back before he landed on the aircraft carrier? He’d have worked with Rove to have himself shot down instead.

Perhaps. They clearly didn’t believe that this was a serious possibility and didn’t really prepare for it. They have essentially admitted as much saying that they had a very, very thin dossier on her. I certainly forgive them for not imagining that McCain could do something this crazy but I would be happier if they had been more prepared.

I’m starting to prepare for things like, “She’s already been vetted by a higher power. Who are you to question this process?”

At the time it was announced everyone was hailing this pick as some kind of ingenious trick play.
Well, sometimes what looks like a fumblerooski is just a fumble.

How dare you question me. I spent 4 1/2 years where vetting involved consulting the entrails of a rat!

Politico’s Ben Smith reports that the current focus of the Obama – Clinton negotiations over Bill Clinton’s foundation and presidential library is looking forward –not necessarily vetting the past. Still, it’s worth remembering that during
