This was the substantive portion of the “Labor Salute to Republicans” event such as it was, with representatives from the NEA, the Firefighters, and some of the building trades talking about the importance of union-GOP ties:
One moral of the story is that interest group politics is more complicated than a simple caricature would offer. And then again, it’s even more complicated than “well, unions need to find a few Republicans to support.” Maybe unions participated in this event, but most didn’t. The more ideological and coalition-minded SEIU is organizing a Take Back Labor Day concert as a counterpoint to the Republican festivities.

These are lobbyists Matt. It’s not uncommon for even the most ardently partisan of interest groups to wine and dine sympathetic elected officials from the other side.
Additionally, I think SEIU putting up a hundred grand to stage a tom morello concert is a fantastic waste of money and energy. They could have dumped that money into the campaigns of pro-worker Republicans and earned dozens of legislative friends for life, something organized labor will need even after the democrats take control of all three branches of government.
SEIU’s a great union and the initiative they’re taking on many levels may very well save organized labor, but man o man is that concert and bus a dumb idea.

Name me one pro-labor Republican who isn’t already on the black list of the conservative base. One.

It’s one of the basic principles of interest group politics – don’t get tied down to one party. As the country club republicans quickly transform into limousine liberals, republicans will need somebody to take their place.
The Unions will be smart to exploit the GOP desperation.
