The Same Man

Sarah Palin: “Wherever he goes and whoever is listening John McCain is always the same man.”

Do we really need to recite the issues on which John McCain has flip-flopped? Estate tax. Top bracket income tax cuts. Torture. Immigration. Climate change. Add more in comments if you like.

  1. Neil the Ethical Werewolf Says:

Surely, Matt, you aren’t going to criticize this fairly orthodox claim about personal identity.

  2. El Cid Says:

Exactly — even when he flip-flops, John McCain is the same man.

  3. Yamascuma Says:

Well, apart from the flip-flops one presumes that John McCain does not call his wife a **** “wherever he goes and whoever is listening.”

  4. Mark Says:

How about this flip-flop: Choosing a vice president who is ready to be President on day one?

  5. WinSmith Says:

    “Until death do us part.”

  6. josh Says:

I think she said something about self dealing? Cue your post about McCain effectively self dealing through his extremely regressive tax plan

  7. Mark Says:

And Sarah Palin apparently refers to the ‘bridge to nowhere’ differently in St. Paul as opposed to Alaska.

  8. anonymiss Says:

So, she’s proud of her vetoes of funding for unwed mothers?

Do they really believe “Democrats will raise your taxes–ooga booga!” will work?

And let me get this–we’re supposed to believe the crowd that loves George Bush loves John McCain because he represents change? Seriously?

And LOL–lobbyists hate McCain? They’re RUNNING his campaign!

Matt, be reasonable, if we all listed McCain’s flip-flops, your server would get overrun.

  10. chrisd Says:

How many times has Palin referred to McCain as a “man” in this speech? If you’re John McCain, I guess one benefit of having an attractive female VP nominee is that you can have her make constant implicit references to your johnson, making you seem stronger and more masculine than you would otherwise. That’s a pretty shallow, sexist use of a VP nominee, but so it goes.

How about intolerant self righteous religious nut cakes?

8 years ago he didn’t think much of them. Now he picks one as his running mate.

  12. Charlie Says:

The maximum length of dildos permitted by law.

  13. El Cid Says:

The Talibangelicals now think they have an actual straight line to the White House, to make up for their disappointment with George W. Bush Jr. (with whom they should have been deliriously happy, but there’s fundamentalists for ya); so even though they face a climb up numerically versus the Democrats’ vote, they certainly have the capacity to make the election weird.

  14. ben Says:

One of the many lies told Mrs. Palin tonight.

  15. Alan Says:

Yes. He’s the same man as George Bush.

  16. Jeff Boghosian Says:

Well this list is up to 75 flip flops, but some are arguable, so it may be less than 70!

  17. Doug Simpson Says:

Palin’s comment was about how McCain doesn’t bad-mouth people when they’re not listening, like Barack Obama supposedly does. But remember that nasty little joke McCain used to tell about why Chelsea Clinton was so ugly? (Answer – Because Janet Reno was her father)

No, we can’t all be that classy.

  18. Jeremy Says:

Don’t we pass out most of the molecules in our body over a certain period of time? So really, none of us are the same people that we were a few months ago.

  19. me Says:

I’m not quite myself anymore. Maybe I’ll come back tomorrow.

  20. Steve Says:

Consider Bishop Berkeley’s famous question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” To be is to be perceived, and unless Obama and Biden point these contradictions out, they pretty much don’t exist. Why didn’t they hammer away at this at the convention, rather than just saying McCain “doesn’t get it?”
