Barkley and Chotiner hit it off, didn’t they? And thank fuck, they’ve rescued the original conversation from the archives, with that great line of his: “America is divided by economics strictly.”
The guy doesn’t have finely-articulated views on policy, but on the fundamental point — how economic hierarchy is maintained by divide-and-conquer politics — he’s ahead of plenty of ’sophisticated’ professional pols and pundits.
Charles is lying. He was a conservative 10 years ago, based on apparently selfish reasons. In 2000 he said on-air that he favored Steve Forbes. Now that the zeitgeist has changed he thinks progressive taxation is no big deal.
I love to see Chuck on TNT, but the guy doesn’t even take his analyst job seriously. And yet it’s racist to say his candidacy for governor would be a joke. Franken has been a political commentator for years.
He’s also pretty weak on basic analytical skills. There’s the time when he said lengthening the holes on the PGA was a racist attempt to undermine long-driving Tiger Woods (when it actually *helped* players who can really drive it). Then there’s this:
“Barkley: First of all, that is so asinine! The league is 80-percent black. Of course there are more fouls!
Chotiner: But I think this was by minutes played.”
He was right about the Dream Team, though:
Stockton> Paul or Williams
Jordan> Kobe
Bird or Magic = Lebron
Barkley> Bosh
Malone> Howard
Mullin> Redd
The dream team versus redeem team thing isn’t a career comparison; you have to compare the teams at the times they were formed. Given that, Bird and Magic would be out; in modern Olympic competition, they wouldn’t be starters.
I still think the ‘92 team wins. I think Robinson would be center and Barkley the power forward. Their games were better suited to FIBA rules than the pure paint guys Malone and Ewing.
Yes, I dare. I think that the 92 team would have had a hard time guarding Lebron. There was no perimeter player that big and strong and agile. Jordan would be guarding Kobe or Wade. Bird and Magic may have been better overall players, granted.

That’s a pretty good interview. It seems that the political views that Chuck endorses are pretty much no-brainers to me.

If he became governor, he’d go from being the Round Mound of Rebound to the Round Mound of Renown.

Wow, great interview. He’s got my vote.

Damned right, Charles. I mean, about this:

Good catch, Al.
On Dan Patrick’s page in SI (my roommate subscribes and I read it in bathroom), he had quotes from Larry Bird and Patrick Ewing on the same subject.
Ewing said “We’d kick their butts,” then presumably started sweating. Bird said ‘92 would win because ‘08 wouldn’t have an answer for Barkley.

I have to agree with that. Barkley was ridonkulous in the Olympics.

One can begin to imagine him winning Alabama in the right year…
Charles Barkley -> George Jefferson -> George Wallace.
Why the hell not?
