Palin Ran Ted Stevens’ 527

stevenspalinbig.jpg

I was just speaking to a couple of GOP activists from North Dakota about Sarah Palin. These were very much the fabled “base” people who are “excited” by the Palin pick. Much like left-wing ideologues, it turns out, conservative activists have a real disliking of “bad” Republicans. So these guys didn’t know very much about Palin’s record in office, but they knew she was a solid conservative who’d managed to take down an incumbent Republican and still hold the statehouse for the GOP. And this, basically, is Palin’s qualification for office — she’s less corrupt than your average Alaska Republican. As best one can tell this is true. But the extent of Palin’s distance from the Alaska Republican establishment can be easily overstated. Consider this reporting by Matthew Mosk:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state’s political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin’s name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.,” a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

And:

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

Meanwhile, John McCain officially thinks 527s should be abolished.

It just gets better and better, doesn’t it?

Turns out the Dan Quayle comparisons were off, the Clarence Thomas comparisons were close but didn’t quite hit the mark, and the Harriet Miers redux predictions were spot on.

You don’t think Romney/Pawlenty/et al aren’t going apeshit right now? Other high level Republican operatives? And what about McCain? Keep a camera out of that guy’s face for a few hours and let him blow off some steam!

    What an unbelievable trainwreck.

  2. SHF Says:

TPM is reporting she’s going to be deposed in the coming weeks (under oath) regarding trooper-gate. This just gets better & better.

Well, on the bright side, this is evidence of her extensive managerial skills. Surely this, along with whatever she did in high school qualifies her to succeed the leader of the free world.

  4. joel Says:

At the same time, John McCain just can’t control what those pesky 527s are saying, even when his own campaign staff is ready the same day to start echoing the same sentiments.

Funny how all that works. A cynical person might be led to think there was some collusion going on, but McCain is “Mr Straight Talk” so surely it’s just a massive string of improbable coincidences.

Get ready for “No comment on advice of my attorney.” She’s now lawyered up for Troopergate. Anti-corruption crusader??

  6. JD Says:

Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, inc.

That’s rich. Sort of like “Michael Jackson Excellence in Child Care Services, inc.”

  7. Richard Steven Hack Says:

So why am I not seeing any of this on the Google News front page? Today’s Palin news is all about her kid’s pregnancy. And what does Obama say? It’s “off limits” to talk about it.

The MSM is owned by people who want McCain to win – and Obama wants to help them.

And Matt’s little blog isn’t going to have any significant impact on either McCain or Palin. Not even Josh Marshall’s “All Republican Corruption All The Time” blog is going to have one bit of influence.

Every negative thing about McCain or Palin is going to be swept under the rug by the MSM. And there’s not a goddamn thing anyone can do about it.

I’m going to be screaming with laughter in November when McCain is elected President, and the Democrats have blown yet another election.

  8. Vail Beach Says:

This story is bullshit. I like Matt so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for being credulous rather than dishonest. But unless you want another “secret baby” embarassment, the left should drop this.

The 527 in question, which is easily found on campaign watchdog websites, was one of several dedicated to boosting the careers of Republican women in several states. There was an Excellence in Public Service 527 in Pennsylvania and Idaho. However, unlike those, the one in Alaska raised no money and spent no money — perhaps because Ted Stevens stuck his name on it, unlike the other ones.

Palin didn’t “run” it. Moreover, it was set up in 2004. Stevens’ last election was in 2002.

Those who are spreading this stupid meme are hoping that the term “527″ evokes slimy negative campaigning. It’s just a legal designation, kids. There are good 527s, bad 527s, and the vast majority of 527s that are completely benign.

It’s becoming more and more obvious that Palin was not properly vetted.

Sarah Palin, to this day supports and spoke words of encouragement to the AIP political party at their 2008 Convention, a secessionist organization whose platform still includes secession by Alaska and whose founding member, Joe Vogler, refused to be considered an American citizen:

“I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions.”

McCain has met with this woman personally for maybe an hour total and is just now sending campaign officials to Alaska to do a proper background check. His campaign even tried to say the FBI had vetted her in their effort to cover up this fiasco.

I received a lot of spirited comments from the last post, so I thought I’d keep poking the bear with the stick. There’s an assumption going through the topic of Sarah Palin’s (non)relationship to the Alaskan Independence Party that works
