Palin as Sportscaster

I don’t really have anything to say about this historical curiosity, but it is interesting to watch:

Why was Alaska local news covering a Mets-Dodgers spring training game?

It was interesting to watch two and a half weeks ago back when everyone was watching it.

The only thing interesting about it today is the fact that it seems to indicate that Matthew blogs by copying over everything he reads at Marty Peretz’s place.

  2. ed Says:

And to think that Harvard Law Review head Barack Obama was a community organizer out of college. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!

  3. Rich Says:

Hey Petey, I didn’t see it, so it’s news to me :) She was a creditable small-market sportscaster, from this limited evidence. It’s a pretty low bar, of course. What’s striking is how regional her accent was–now it’s somewhat more generic.

  4. steve duncan Says:

    MILF

  5. Whitey Says:

Wow, her accent used to be even thicker.

  6. ed Says:

She has the experience to be NBA Commish!

  7. yep Says:

GET THIS ON A COMMERCIAL, DNC! This indirectly highlights her lack of experience and packages her sex appeal into the “airhead news anchor” stereotype. And, it’d be very funny in a sarcastic commercial.

  8. Petey Says:

“Wow, her accent used to be even thicker.”

The first time I heard her speak, I bought McCain to win Minnesota and North Dakota on the basis of the accent alone. It’s Only a Northern song.

  9. tim Says:

I don’t know. She does a fine job here, but doesn’t it really destroy any semblance of an image of being a president?

There’s nothing wrong with the video at all. Nothing embarrassing. But that’s kind of what’s so damaging about it to me.

I’m in the tank for Obama all the way, but if I were a McCain fan and saw this video, I think this might give me pause.

Maybe not, but having that image in my head really makes it hard to consider her at all a serious candidate. I might like Linda Cohn, but I’m not planning on voting for her to run the country.

  10. Pete Says:

The highlight of the Purdue game might have been the most minorities Sarah Palin had ever seen in her life.

  11. Bragan Says:

    Fascinating /Spock

OH, and fuck off, Petey. Your schtick is so old now the rotten stench spills out the intertubes.

  12. Norm Says:

Hmmm. That voice. The hair. Those ear rings. Who does she remind me of?…

    “Go Bears!”

  13. Petey Says:

“Your schtick is so old now the rotten stench spills out the intertubes.”

I believe that is merely the smell of your own breath, Bragan. It’s a mistake that happens often to mouth-breathers.

  14. Seitz Says:

McKay Arena? Blasphemous. People don’t get wacky at McKay. They get wacky at Mackey!

  15. Jeffrey Davis Says:

Wasn’t she also one of the background girls in Squeeze’s “Tempted” video? (She was also the best thing about St. Elmo’s Fire.)

  16. Bragan Says:

Here’s the thing, Petey, I can understand the motivation of a rightwing troll like E. O’Neil to hang out in Matt’s blog and hopefully disrupt some threads.

But I don’t get your motivation — do you repeat your snide criticisms of Matt and Obama because you hold grudges against them? Obama bested both your first and second picks for the Dem. nomination and Matt, despite being a young “trustfund scumbag,” for having the career path and receiving the attention you long for?

  17. Ryan Says:

    Dude! Flame War! Wicked!

  18. nt Says:

She’s pretty good at following that prompter, isn’t she?

  19. Jaymeister Says:

    Boom goes the dynamite!

  20. GtheK Says:

She was remarkably prescient, seeing that the Mets and Dodgers played for the for the Pennant in 1988.

  21. bartkid Says:

    >Why was Alaska local news covering a Mets-Dodgers spring training game?

Um, typical Juneau temperature in February: -22 degrees.
Typical daytime Orlando temperature in February: +74 degrees.

  22. Scott Herbst Says:

They were probably covering Mets/Dodgers because someone local plays for one of those two teams. We get that in Reno all the time on the local news, where they’ll show White Sox highlights because a kid who went to high-school here plays for them.

  23. Scott Herbst Says:

    Ed…

Putting David Stern and Sarah Palin in the same class is just wrong. Sure, Stern’s made mistakes, but please…

  24. Petey Says:

“and Matt … for having the career path … you long for?”

I’m actually quite pleased with the results of my decision not to live in the District. But thank you for your concern.

What I can’t understand, Bragan, is your fixation with me. But, hey, keep it coming. Having mouth-breathers slag me always makes me look better.

  25. sw Says:

Oh come on. It’s MA-key Arena. Rhymes with lackey.

That’s it. She will not be getting my vote.

  26. Leee Says:

Having mouth-breathers slag me always makes me look better.

Actually, getting slagged off by quality is what you should aim for, since that would burnish your standing in the general consciousness.

  27. Petey Says:

“Actually, getting slagged off by quality is what you should aim for, since that would burnish your standing in the general consciousness.”

Were I running for national political office, sure. But blogs are for folks who can read.

Different tactics work for different audiences.

  28. sean Says:

um, they covered the mets-dodgers b/c the sprinklers went off. you know…one of those wacky sports clips. for a smart guy, you sure are dumb sometimes

  29. CJColucci Says:

Someone should cut out the Big Ten game and splice in footage of Barack playing basketball. (For the young among you, “splice” is a verb involving cutting out and substituting long strips of celluloid containing images that, when played in quick succession, appear to move. There’s probably a digital way to do it now, and an appropriate word.)

  30. Josh E. Says:

Wasn’t she married right after college? Why’s she called Sarah Heath here? Is she one of those hairy-legged feminists?

Ah, the days when Michigan’s basketball team made the tournament.

  31. croatoan Says:

I just found out my sister in law and my nieces were there (not sure where my brother was). Even got quoted by the AP (about 19-20 paragraphs down).

  34. Jon Says:

Clearly, an Alaskan local news broadcast showed a Mets-Dodgers spring training game because Sarah Palin is clairvoyant, and wanted to prepare baseball fans for the Tragedy of ‘88. I still remember the back cover of the Daily News that October. Now wait until she uses her powers to help President McCain stay two steps ahead of Putin.

Also: four minutes for sports? I don’t watch much local news, but that seemed like a long segment to me. Is this a relic of the pre-This is Sportscenter era?

  35. Nordy Says:

When it comes to facing al Qaeda, Sarah Palin will not blink.

When it comes to broadcasting sports highlights, Sarah Palin will not blink.

  36. Joel Says:

    Is that a femullet?

  37. Joel Says:

I forgot to mention. Any clip with a Steve Scheffler mention is a great clip.

  38. RW Says:

Well she is a credi(ta)ble heiress to Bush in the sense that she has difficulty reading.

  39. CParis Says:

If the governor thing doesn’t work out for her, Palin has a fine career ahead as a Faux NewsModel. She’ll need to go blonde, but she does have the non-blinking thing down.

  40. Comment Says:

She’s very much a babe in this tape – Very cute. Not sure what that means politically -
