Paisley on the Crisis

CAP’s Ed Paisley explains what’s going on in convenient video form:

I had this idea the other day that what think tanks really need to do is produce videos where good-looking actors read scripts written for them by the policy experts. People get annoyed when celebrities just mouth off on the big issues of the day, but I think the public would be much more amenable to something pitched specifically as acting. Imagine CAP on the Paulson Plan starring George Clooney as Ed Paisley. Megan Fox says she wants to be taken more seriously and starring in some public policy videos would probably be a better way of achieving that goal than doing GQ features and the cover of Maxim.

No one is going to take Megan Fox more seriously on policy than on the cover of Maxim.

Maxim is where I go for all my policy wonkery. The issue with Hedi Montag on the cover had a great piece on the Employee Free Choice Act.

For once can we not fall back on form and grind partisan axes? The bailout rape of the taxpayers is a BIPARTISAN effort. If we let the pols in D.C. and their Wall Street pimps play the divide and conquer game, they win and we lose. Big time.

E-mail Senators and Congressman of BOTH parties, opposing this bullshit.

    Matt,
Everyone knows better than that: Clooney will be reading Krugman’s lines.

Look, could we please get these economists to solve one problem at a time, and not use the immediate crisis as an opportunity to gain an audience for all of their pet theories about the “underlying”, “systematic” and “root” causes of everything bad in the economy, from poor trade imbalances to lagging wages?

We really don’t have to solve every problem in one grand all-encompassing package that fixes the whole systematic mess in one fell swoop. Why are progressives promoting this notion that we now have just one immediate-term shot to fix the whole economy. One thing at a time.

My understanding is that the immediate problem is that through a combination of default and doubt in the mortgage market, and the convoluted mechanisms that make it hard to estimate the actual value of mortgage-backed assets, we have collapsing prices in the financial markets and failing financial firms, and that this is leading to a crisis in the ability of the financial sector to capitalize the US economy – and the global economy for that matter – on which all of our jobs depend. Isn’t our immediate task just figuring out the best way to stop this bleeding, stabilize the patient and set it on the road to recovery from the present acute ailment?

After we do that, we can talk about long-term prevention, and how to get the patient to live a healthier lifestyle. Damn it, I feel like I am being treated to learned discourses on the nature of the human immune system and the danger of high-sodium diet while my relative is on the operating table in the emergency ward undergoing an emergency bypass.

As it happens, according to the interview with Brian Austin Green on Ellen Degeneres the other day – which of course I watched because he’s “Derek Reese” on the Terminator show – Megan Fox is “the hottest girl on Earth” according to the magazine cover Ellen discovered MEgan was on.

I don’t know if that was GQ, since she’s on that cover for the October issue – not to mention that Summer Glau has both a really hot shot in that issue, and a hot photoshoot video to go along with Megan’s.

Megan also happens to be Brian’s fiancee. So he was wondering if that meant people both on and OFF-planet voted, i.e., was that a Solar System-wide election?

    Decide for yourself.

I’m having a bit of trouble seeing how propping up housing prices can plausibly be construed as a progressive goal. Skyrocketing housing prices have priced way too many people out of the housing market; until prices come down — and I mean all the way down — there are a huge number of people who will not be able to buy homes. House prices simply cannot stay higher than the level at which they are affordable for people to buy, so the only thing that will stabilize prices is to have them come back down where they should be. Or maybe CAP is arguing that those of us who might be interested in buying a house should get a big chunk of that $700 billion so we can buy houses at inflated prices??

This “good news for the housing market is good news for everyone” meme that is so pervasive in the media has got to be stopped. Good news in the housing market means good news for SELLERS, not buyers, who are half the people in the market. For some reason America loves homeowners, to the point of hating those who aspire to be homeowners…
