New Express Bus Proposal

Ward One council member Jim Graham is circulating the following proposed map for a new specially-branded, limited service bus along the lines of the existing Circulator or Metro Express lines. I’m having a hard time evaluating it, because this proposed route involves a very small number of stops, one of which is very close to my house and another of which is very close to my office, so obviously I have a strong personal interest in seeing it adopted:

Dave Alpert has further ideas. Whether or not this route is adopted, I think there’s a very strong case for painting (and enforcing!) dedicated bus/bike lanes down the bulk of 14th street. Bus service on that corridor is already fairly frequent and popular, and adding bus lanes would allow us to increase the speed and frequency of bus service at low cost and turn the service into something that’s more useful and appealing to the burgeoning population along the corridor.

Expect E. O’Neal to show up and explain to us how inefficient mass transit is actually an ‘asset’.

should probably go down 16th st since 14th is already well served by the green line, matt’s house aside…

For those of us in Columbia Heights, I think our biggest problem is the lack of a consistent east-west bus route through the neighborhood. While the circulator seems to have that feature, so does the H1 route, which doesn’t run nearly frequently enough. The map of the H1 route is here:

By going out to Brookland, this route has the added benefit of connecting travelers from both ends of the red line.

14th St is NOT well-served by the Green Line, and that’s the point. The Green Line jogs west to pick up at Columbia Heights, and then runs back over to the 7th St Corridor. An express bus from Columbia Heights down to below Mass would actually be very helpful because it would take away the need for a transfer or a several block walk.

My understanding is that they weren’t originally planning a Metro in Columbia Heights, so I’m definitely not complaining about it. But I’m all for an express bus on 14th.

On the other hand, 16th St is already jammed with all kinds of excellent bus routes.

The east west Circulator is very convenient for me when I have meetings in Washington, since I often need to go Union Station to 15th and K or so. Depending on time of day, the headway time is about that of the Metro and it’s nice to be on the bus in nice weather. I”d be interested to know how the Circulator clientele overlaps with the existing Metrobus ridership in terms of destinations and so forth

If they run it frequently at night it will give much better access to the 14th St./U St. nightlife and restaurant corridor, for example from the McPherson Square metro on the Orange and Blue lines, so I hope they do it for that reason alone. Especially good for jazz fans, since most of DC’s jazz clubs are near this route (including my favorite: HR-57).
