Agreed. Even if they began the broadcast with the “Helmet Catch”. (I am a longtime Patriot rooter even though I now live in Giantland.) Still I would rather listen to John Madden than to Giuliani. And that’s saying something.
Wow, this is one of the few times I actually agree with you! Seriously, football definitely beats political conferences. I think you may be able to find some college ball on too.
MY, are you a Redskins fan? If so, good for you. I think it’s better when people let go of their hometown teams and pull for the teams of the city in which they choose to live. (I’m assuming you live in DC these days.)
And you know what’s more fun that Monday Night Football(tm) on Thursday night? The NY Giants beginning their defense of their SB Championship with a win over their division rivals, the Washington Something-or-Others.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Daunte Culpepper’s retirement. Really, for the early part of the decade he was second to Peyton Manning in ability. I know Culpepper flailed for the last few years, but I felt really sad to hear about his retirement at 31.
Speaking of the Washington Deadskins, I think that Sally Jenkins, who I usually disdain as the sports version of Maureen Dowd hits a home run in her column today. As she stated last fall, the problem with the Deadskins is not the coach, its the asshole owner and his incompetent director of football operations.
London Fletcher was a tackling machine. Too bad the offense could not muster a reasonable showing. Either the NYG’s wounded defense is better than one might think, or the Redskin offense is in a world of hurt.
Football is awesome. Fletcher has been underrated for years; he is a very solid LB. Yes, the Washington offense was unimpressive, but it hasn’t been in years and I think it’s just going to be very uneven from week to week. I was extremely impressed with the Giants DL performance, given the losses they have seen. Yes, Plax is amazing. What he did last year on a sprained ankle was truly remarkable. But what it goes to show is that if you are big and fast, and learn the fundamentals, you can be very effective in the NFL. But no, the Giants will not be repeating this year. They are 50/50 to make the playoffs this year. The Eagles are way over-hyped this year and will not necessarily be able to steal that wild card spot from them (behind Dallas, of course).
I was bummed about Culpepper’s retirement too. But it should spark a whole debate about the position. NFL Coaches know how to win with the Peyton Manning-Tom Brady type of QB, but is the problem with the big, strong, athletic, rifle-armed running threat (OK, let’s say it — black) QB like Culpepper, McNabb, Vick, or Russell that coaches haven’t figured out how to win with them or that the model doesn’t work in the NFL? Just to forestall any misunderstanding, I don’t have a dog in this fight — maybe I should rephrase that — but I’d like to hear about this from people who know a lot more about football than I do.
I don’t think it’s a matter so much of coaches not knowing how to win with black Quarterbacks so much as it’s just a matter of numbers.
Until relatively recently there very few starting Quarterbacks in the league who were black, and consequently they just didn’t have all that many chances to win Super Bowls. I started watching the NFL back in the 90’s, the only prominent black QB’s I can think of from that ere were Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, and (shudder) Kordell Stewart.
Obviously there are still a lot fewer starting QB’s who are black than white, but things are slowly beginning to move in a more equitable direction. Dave Garrard might win one before he’s done, and McNabb hasn’t retired yet either.
The QBs you just listed are just not all that similar. Culpepper may never have been very good. But a guy with a big arm and a strong OL throwing to Randy Moss will look very good. As a scrambler the only real unique feature he brought to the table was his QB sneak ability due to his size. Other than that, certainly no more mobile than Jake Plummer.
McNabb is very good. The Eagles went to 4 conference title games and a Superbowl. What’s wrong with that? If he hadn’t choked in the Superbowl, they might have won.
Vick had a couple of very good seasons. And some not so good ones. But he’s a much different type of runner- very fast/agile, but not big and not a very good passer, so some of his poorer performances were not that surprising.
And you’re leaving off Vince Young. I’d say he’s getting screwed by the Titans. Either bring in some WR for him to throw to, or implement an option offense. They’ve done neither, but I don’t think you can indict the whole NFL due to one team’s mismanagement.
Hello Guru, what entice you to post an article. This article was extremely interesting, especially since I was searching for thoughts on this subject last Thursday.

Hell yeah.
But man, this second half has been pretty boring. Redskins can’t get it together, and the giants don’t seem to care much.

make them cover plax….thx.

I would like this post more if you laid your biases on the table. Are you NYG man or a Hog?

Tell ya what, Jimbo- the table ain’t been made…oh sorry; we’re you trashing at me?

Boy was that second half uneventful. I enjoyed seeing manning get picked once and sacked twice, but overall, pretty meh.
Looking forward to Sunday…

That’s too bad Matt, you just missed McCain reminding the GOP that it’s not okay to be racist. Maybe his surrogates will listen.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
no labdancer, that was at the blogger. hope nothing was inappropriately rankled permanently out of place.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
You might have been ready, but the Redskins’ offense wasn’t. Zorn himself starts at QB in Week 4.
September 4th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
You know what’s more fun than political conventions? Football!</i.
And tennis too. I just skipped the last part of McCain’s speech to watch Roddick choke away the match in a 4th set tiebreak.
