Gramm Reiterates “Whiners” Argument
Phil Gramm, who fake stepped down as a McCain adviser while continuing to advise McCain after it became embarrassing for the candidate to be associated with a man who thinks America is a “nation of whiners,” is back at it:
“If you’re sitting here today, you’re not economically illiterate and you’re not a whiner, so I’m not worried about who you’re going to vote for,” Gramm told supporters of McCain at a Financial Services Roundtable event in Minneapolis on the sidelines of the Republican National Convention.
He also seems to have slipped up and used the first person plural:
Good to know. Meanwhile, at the peak of the Bush-era expansion, average incomes are slightly lower than they were at the previous pick, which basically never happens. This is by no means necessarily all the fault of conservative policies but it’s hard to imagine solutions emerging from a political movement that thinks it’s “whining” to be worried about problems.

“We went through a process of vetting all possible candidates,” narrowing it down to three before choosing Palin, he said.
When asked later whether he still has a role in the campaign, Gramm said, “I’m a supporter.”

The only thing that’s ironic is that two days after the first time Gramm said everything was hunky-dory, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac imploded. I guess Wall Street is full of whiners, too.

Not only has my 401K not done well in the last 8 years, my house–thanks in large part to bush & the other thieves running an insane mortgage Ponzi scheme–has lost $75,000 in value. And not only that–the bush’s whiny, wimpy “strong dollar” policy has eroded my savings & investment.

Finanially illiterate- aren’t these are the people who fell over the cliff during the tech wreck and/or lost their shareholders’ money in the housing bubble? They certainly have no reason to whine as when things go wrong, they go to their friends the Feds for a bailout. The rest of us, however, are on our own.
And WTF is Gramm’s great financial credentials? I’m sure he’s where he is today because of his political juice, not his financial expertise. Please.

I have to disagree, Matt. It is most definitely “all the fault of conservative policies”.
From the first days of the Reagan Administration and their war on the middle and working classes, the financial fix in which we find ourselves is most definitely their fault.
Further, the current energy crisis and global warming are also entirely their fault. I know you have to be polite because you’re a bigshot journalist and all, but I’ve got no problem stating what for most of us is obvious.

I’ll agree about Vanguard…HOWEVER. Most companies don’t give you a choice to move your 401K’s to another brokerage. Mine isn’t doing so well as the broker who sold the 401K to the company was a customer of the company…insider deals with hidden fees…you bet…(I am not there anymore but don’t have an employer to take it to… and that one is so small I am not worried about it except to watch it represent the average 401K).
I am moving my funds to a self employment IRA…which allows more flex. Most 401Ks are a crooked deal with hidden fees that even experts can’t discern.

No one sitting in that meeting was financially illiterate – but I’ll bet most of them have benefited at one time or another from the corporate welfare in the nation that virtually won’t allow companies to fail if they become too large. Unfortunately, today you can run a company into the ground and not suffer any adverse consequences if the company is large enough to begin with…
