There’s going to be a liveblog over at the ThinkProgress main page where I’ll be joining the rest of the team in offering relatively brief, contemporaneous commentary. At the same time, any more substantive remarks I come up with will go here, along with some coverage of the post-debate commentary. So, basically, you should read both blogs. And, of course, the Wonk Room.
Now a question I have: A lot of the stations that will be covering this debate — the networks, PBS, and CNN on my package — have HD channels. But will the debate actually be broadcast in high definition? My sense is that the standard McCain makeup job can’t stand up to that much scrutiny.

John McCain. Looking good.

John McCain? I thought that was Lon Chaney.

McCain will tell 5 outright lies, and Obama will misstate a few numbers or years, which the press will report as being equivalent.

It’ll be filmed in HD.

Didn’t McCain hire that $5000 mortuary make-up lady? He’ll look almost life-like.

CNN has special features for HD viewers. There will be little graphics for each of their pundits running along the sides of the screen. The pundits will note when they think one of the candidates does particularly well. Only in HD!

Watching it in HD right now. McCain looks like he’s going to cry under the lights.

Matt, while the subject of Nixon’s sweaty forehead in 1960 came up even in my 11th grade history class, I still think that was a cheap shot about McCain’s makeup.

I watched it in HD (nice big 46 inch screen), and remembering Matt (not me) blogging on the HD-debate point I was especially looking at McCain’s face. I don’t think he looked as bad as I had been expecting. He looked odd more because of the little smile-grimaces he kept doing when Obama was speaking, and certainly he looked pasty and older (even compared to Lehrer, who’s no spring chicken either), but I didn’t think it hurt him as much as I was expecting.
