Authenticity

Mike Tomasky explains the difference between the authentic American experience of growing up in Alaska eating moose, and the frighteningly exotic experience of growing up in Hawaii raised by your grandparents.

Coincidentally, last night I read a funny essay by Robert Benchley which made fun of the idea that Mid-Westerners were the “real Americans” and that New Yorkers were the exotics. I think the essay came from 1928.

And that infamous Bridge to Nowhere, I did tell Congress, “Thanks, but no thanks”

Seriously, would somebody please this ignorant person to stop saying this. NEWS FLASH….ALERT….NEWS FLASH…..

It isn’t true and she sounds retarded when she says it.

    Tomasky omits my very favorite.

If your wife says she is newly proud of her country, she is “entitled” and unfit to be a first lady.

If your wife got off scot-free after stealing drugs from a charity that she runs using her spare time and money, she has courageously put a struggle behind her.

I’m starting to feel sorry for Palin. Her ignorance on display for all the world to see. I mean, for the office of Vice President, this person is astonishingly underqualified, and to watch her spin her career as if it has in any way qualified her to be one heartbeat away from the most power job in the world is the stuff of great comedy. But now that I’ve been laughing for 10 days straight, I’m starting to feel sorry for her.

McCain is the idiot that asked her to be VP. Was she supposed to say “thanks, but no thanks” (chuckle)? Yeah, I guess I feel sorry for her to a certain extent. But then I realize she’s a jesus freak and I chuckle once more.

Yes, but look at the comments field over there (like every other one online) and even in that article you’ll see it’s full of people who are convinced Obama is a coke-fiend incapable of speaking (?) or holding office with shadowy ties to the Black Panthers.

Honestly? That would have been a pretty smart thing to say. She is the new and (I believe) popular governor of a small, oil-rich state. She could easily have hung out for a while, brought home the pork, kept giving great jobs to her school chums, and just basically living large without much scrutiny.

Instead, she may have just dropped her bone in the water. If the play for VP doesn’t work out, she may be quite a bit more vulnerable when her time for re-election rolls around.

They like to make fun of the fact that he often says “uh” in response to questions. The basic idea is that he can only speak well when he’s reading from a teleprompter.

In other words, it’s a petty attempt to make Obama seem less intelligent. Because, you know, he’s a negro, and we all know they’re not as smart as the rest of us. Sound harsh? I don’t think I’m that far off the mark.

What Brad L said. She may have ended her politcal career, or at least given it a big set back. All these scndals in Alaska would probably have died down without the scrutiny of a national campaign. By 2012 or 2016 they’d be old news in the distant past.

She could have very credibly said no thanks to McCain becasue of her newborn with Downs.

This general election proves MY’s point that nearly half the voters will go Democratic, and nearly half GOP, no matter who is on the ticket… but, that we’ll manage to frame our support/opposition based on our existing predilection.

The McCain/Palin ticket will rank as the defining example for future poly sci undergrad seminars.
