Across the Pond

dati_1.jpg

Alex Massie notes that they handle their pregnancy politics a whole different way in France:

Rachida Dati, the 42 year old French Justice Minister, is, like Bristol Palin, pregnant. As Art Goldhammer says, however, they do things differently in France. Dati says she has no intention of revealing the father’s identity and offers this marvellous comment: “I have a very complicated private life, and that’s where I draw the line with the press. I won’t have anything to say on that subject.”

Meanwhile, Byron York offers this provocative thought: “If the Obamas had a 17 year-old daughter who was unmarried and pregnant by a tough-talking black kid, my guess is if that they all appeared onstage at a Democratic convention and the delegates were cheering wildly, a number of conservatives might be discussing the issue of dysfunctional black families.”

Wow, she’s gorgeous. Even more beautiful than Sarah Palin!

  2. sven Says:

It is absolutely sexist to say that Sarah Palin should be judged on the basis of her family life while male politicians clearly are not.

It is NOT sexist to say that Republicans are a bunch of hypocrites.

Republicans are a bunch of hypocrites.

  3. Ted Says:

“might be”? That’s far too kind.

See a neurologist. I think you’ve had blunt force trauma to the brain.

  5. phi Says:

why isn’t anyone mentioned the months of flak michelle obama got for her “proud” comments? it happens on both sides folks…

Seemingly, you’ve forgotten the uproar over Clinton’s and Obama’s family life.

Don’t forget John Edwards, Gary Hart, etc.

That’s not a culture war you can believe in, mes amis.

  12. DonBoy Says:

Let’s see if Levi ever gets called “Bristol’s babydaddy” by Fox. C’mon, let’s.

  13. Mo Says:

Could the difference be that Bristol is 17 and Rachida is 42? One is not yet out of high school, the other has a successful career? If I got my girlfriend pregnant now, at age 30, it would be completely different than if I got my high school girlfriend pregnant. Today, I could support a family if needed. Back then, I’d have to put college on hold, make a quarter of what I do now and live a tougher life.

  14. ohiomeister Says:

I will definitely be keeping Byron York’s words in mind during Sarah Palin’s speech tonight.

    Egads!

  15. ohiomeister Says:

The comparison to the French situation, meanwhile, is stupid.

If Sarah Palin were having a baby and refusing to name the father or talk about it, that would be similar. However, 17-year-old Bristol Palin is having the baby, a huge difference, but to top it off, she’s also not talking about it!

  16. lotosesser Says:

My guess: Sarkozy’s already cheating on Carla.

“Complicated” isn’t the half of it.

  17. The Angry Three Rights Says:

Rachida Dati, Moroccan, Algerian, “French woman of French origins” all part of the vast Angry Left that tortured Senator McCain for years at the Hanoi Hilton. She’s clearly a self-loathing sexist seen in her reckless disregard for the public’s right, nay, necessity to know who sired the child. Is not every sperm sacred, therefore, demand public praise amen?

Alright, let me revise my statement I said:

It is absolutely sexist to say that Sarah Palin should be judged on the basis of her family life while male politicians clearly are not.

When what I meant to say was:

It is absolutely sexist to say that Sarah Palin should be judged on the basis of her family life in ways male politicians clearly are not.

Is this a statement you disagree with?

BTW, I appreciate your insulting me rather than asking for a simple clarification….

    ie

Do you really think male politicians are never judged on the basis of their family life? What about…

  19. The Angry Three Rights Says:

sven, no insult intended, but IMO I don’t think you’re understanding the fundamental critique. And I absolutely disagree with your assessment. Changing ‘while’ to ‘in ways’ demonstrates a understanding of sexual biology (there are non-ideological differences between William J. Clinton and Sarah Palin and her female off-spring), but would appear to fall short of understanding that human sexuality has been discussed in the kangaroo court of public opinion via the media overlords in fairly base, coarse, destructive, and infantile ways that probably get pretty good ratings and advertising dollars. The targets have been XYers, as well as, XXers.

  20. Jay Severin Has A Small Pen1s Says:

Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?

Because her father is Janet Reno.

    -John McCain

  21. Jeffrey Davis Says:

Sarah Palin was introduced to us, the public, with some of the most intimate family details imaginable. Were this Perry Mason, Counselor would point out to the court that the issue was introduced on direct questioning.

It’s called letting the genie out of the bottle. Opening Pandora’s Box. Getting hoist on their own petard.

    Some cliche or other.

  22. 55 Says:

I wish I were the father.

  23. LIJ Says:

Can we puh-leeeez just get back to the first and most relevant topic introduced in comments: that Rachida Dati is absolutely gorgeous!

  24. ol one eye Says:

Arrrghhhhhhh!!!!!!! but that is one hot justice minister. I jest been watchin the republican convention an I got to say, no wonder they hates the french. The frickin french make them look like potatoes in clothes. An she’s jest the justice minister. THat’s like the equivilent er alberto gonsalez. Think what THIEr VP must look like. Holy crap! There’s a hotness gap here that must be addressed! It a global competitiveness issue. Were falling behind in the political babe race. I’ll bet that justice minister gots an amazing behind. It’s french too. Thier behinds are different. Better. Frickin god damned republicans.

  25. Richard Steven Hack Says:

I looked up Rachida using Google Images. She’s not THAT gorgeous. She’s probably pretty much along the same level as Sarah Palin.

She dresses well (naturally, being French), and is definitely attractive – but not gorgeous – not even at my age do I feel any need to consider her to be gorgeous.

Segolene Royal looks as good as she does or better. Check Segolene out:

As for a hotness gap, we could close it quickly by doing what I continually suggest: run Angelina Jolie for President or VP.

  26. Richard Steven Hack Says:

Oops, first link got truncated by the blog software, apparently.

Combine these two lines together to get the full URL.
