What’s the Matter With Lithuania?
John Hollinger has a good question:
Here’s a story somebody ought to cover: How Lithuania is at all competitive in basketball. Lithuania has only 3.6 million people, or slightly less than the population of Oregon. It’s about 1/80th the size of the U.S. and 1/11th as big as Spain or Argentina.
And though it didn’t win a medal in Beijing, it reached the semifinals once again — something it’s done in all five Olympic tournaments since independence. And before that, the country essentially won a gold medal in 1988 (all but one key player on the Soviet team was Lithuanian).
What’s more, not only did they make the semis this time around, they did so without the services of two (Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Darius Songaila) of their three NBA players and with European star Arvydas Macijauskas also out. As everyone knows, to succeed at basketball you need tall people. Not only do even your backcourt players need to be tall, but you need to be able to pull several freakishly tall big men together. It seems inconceivable that such a tiny country could manage to field so many quality basketball players consistently over an extended period of time no matter how basketball-mad the country may be. Is Vilnius just full of people 6′8″ and taller?

matt,
just as the US is very diverse as far as our sporting interest, Eastern Europe (with countries including Lithuania) has basketball as their prime sport.
They focus most (if not all) of their sporting attention on training kids to play the game, and that’s one of the reasons the NBA adopts and drafts Eastern European players as well as french, spanish and italian players — because they play team basketball rather than a fancy street or playground game that the US players tend to grow up around.

Lithuania is the only country in the world where basketball is the national sport. They are nuts about it. During Lithuanian’s brief independence before WWII, the country won two European titles. So basketball has always been a part of the country’s national identity.
Sort of like baseball players in the Dominican or hockey players in Canada.

I don’t know. Why is Jamaica so frickin’ good at sprinting? Population may not be as important as we think when it comes to any one particular sport.
Now if you want to be good in several dozen sports, you probably need to be bigger than two or three million people.

The Lithuanian basketball team is obviously a powerful force for good in the world, possessed of strength, character, persistence and skills beyond a level you’d expect. John McCain should invite them to join NATO.

I’m 6′3, I knew at least a half dozen Lithuanians in grad school and every single one was substantially taller than me.

It’s partly that they’re quite tall. But I don’t understand why Lithuanians would be any taller than Latvians, Estonians or other Scandinavian peoples. Even in the US, we have a shortage of serviceable big men (see, Lakers, Western Conference Champions ‘07). But they have lots in Lithuania? Crazy.
I hope the Spurs get Javtokas to come over soon.

steve duncan is close. Lithuania simply applies the Green Lantern Theory to basketball. They’ve become really good because they have a sufficiently strong willpower to be good. It’s easy, guys.

Lithuanians are nuts about basketball, and they’re tall. There are lots of Lithuanians in my neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio, and they are effin’ tall, whether they were born here in Ohio or not. I went to law school with one who must have been 6′7″. Amusingly enough, he married a Jamaican. I am not making this up.

It’s probably a combination of having really tall guys despite their smallish population (Sabonis, Ilgauskas, etc.) and being absolutely crazy about basketball. It’s hard for Americans to understand just how popular soccer is in most of the world and how many resources it takes away from other sports in those countries. When another sport is more popular, it changes everything. So it’s not that unusual for a relatively small country to do very well in a sport if they are using their capabilities fully and the others are not.

Why wouldn’t it be? Average male height in the US is about 5′ 9″; for black men it’s 5′ 10″.
Lithuania, incidentally, has the same average height as the US.

Good point. It’s just as easy for a 6 footer to succeed as taller players. Iverson’s not the exception. He’s the rule!
Most backcourt players, and some front court players, are between 6″0 and 6″1.

I have to agree with the “nuts about basketball” theory, causing all Lithuanians to devote themselves to developing the sickest B-ball skills outside of the U.S. When I was assistant coaching a high school team, we had this 6′1″ Lithuanian kid from V-Town, Martynas. His J was a thing of beauty. Anytime he got the ball behind the arc on the baseline: swish. I still cry when I think about it…

That makes sense, though I’d point out that very tall players are relatively uncommon in soccer. It is questionable how many of the tall basketball players from Lithuania would have gone into soccer had that been their country’s primary sport.

Lots of countries do very well at one or two particular sports. The Hungarians dominate water polo. Many of the top javelin throwers are Finnish.

As everyone knows, a shorter three point line levels the playing field for teams that are unable to find tall, strong front court players.
This is why small Division 1 schools are able to compete with huge programs with budgets that dwarf theirs, and it’s the same reason that international teams have found success against US teams built around an NBA style of play that assumes very difficult front court shots.
FIBA and NCAA rules make for a more complete game, and allow teams to play smart, skillful basketball and still have success against more athletic, physical teams.

That explanation makes sense to me. If you have a large country that has a an average ratio (for modern nations) of its men who have what are generally the minimum physical characteristics one men who tend to become good at basketball, but in that country the people aren’t at all interested in basketball, it reduces the pool of potential basketball players by a lot.
I’m sure if every man in America who had genetic potential to become, say, a great sprinter was identified around high school and successfully encouraged to train for sprinting instead of doing something else, we would have a much greater number of potentially Olympic-level sprinters out there, and our chances of winning the Olympic gold all the time would rise. It’s the same thing with anything– who know how many people who could be monumentally talented at something, but who ended up doing something different, are out there.

I’m actually pretty shocked that nobody has mentioned Frank Lubin — aka Pranas Lubinas. UCLA star, basketball gold medalist in 1936 games, moved to Lithuania and pretty much single-handedly turned basketball into their national sport.
That, in a nutshell, is the Lituanian secret. They may be tall — I don’t know — but the main thing is that they got a really good U.S. player about 30 years earlier than the rest of the world, had some success, and decided to build on it.

@jamie: Latvia, Finland and Sweden have Ice Hockey as the main winter indoor sport. Denmark and Norway – and to some degree Sweden – have handball as their main indoor sport. Not much room for basketball, then.
Basketball has made some inroads in Sweden, though – my guess is that immigration from Greece and ex-Yugoslavia has played a role in creating an audience here.
I didn’t know about the pre-WW2 history, but I find it interesting that the sport survived the USSR-years.

I understand that Lithuanians are nuts about basketball. But there’s still the basic problem here of the short supply of tall people. It’s not as if the German soccer team is full of dudes Dirk Nowitzki’s size. It simply seems impossible to me that such a small country could produce an adequate supply of quality hoopsters even if everyone plays basketball all the time.

Lithuania does indeed have a reputation for being full of tall people.
From wikipedia:
“At the end of the 19th century, the average height of males was 163.5 cm and the average height of females was 153.3 cm.”
That’s damn tall for that time.
A lot of Russian writing refers to “Letts” as being big men and women.

Small countries being freakishly devoted to and astoundingly accomplished at one sport isn’t all that rare (and thus, less freakish than it initially seems). Other examples include Hungarian fencers, Bulgarian weightlifting, Romanian gymnastics, Israeli judo, South Korean female golfing, etc. Aren’t the Finns also particularly adept at that strange sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting?

I know baseball is off-topic for this blog, but just as a data point, there have been an amazing number of big-league baseball players produced by the town of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, population 20,000 or so I believe. Cultural factors and coaching/mentoring are big.
Somebody mentioned Arvidas Sabonis in passing; he put up some good NBA stats, especially for a guy who was 31 and whose wheels were shot before he joined the league. Until Yao at least, Sabonis was probably the greatest post player ever developed outside the U.S.

There’s another factor here which is sort of tied up to the ’small country’ thing: if you’re one of the 5 best basketball players in Oregon, chances are you’ll be on an NBA roster somewhere. If you’re one of the 5 best basketball players in Lithuania, you’re a national hero. That’s quite the motivating factor.
(At the Olympics, there was a Latvian weightlifter who is also an MP. In small countries, you have to double up a bit.)

The actor who played the star in “Hoosiers” (Jimmy Chitwood) was Maris Valainis. Pretty sure that’s a Lithuanian name. Not much information about him on the net, but it says he was born in Indianapolis.

South Korean women dominate the LPGA to such an extent that management is imposing an English-proficiency requirement. Sponsors were complaining that they were paying good money to compete in pro-ams and have meet-and-greet events with players, only to find out that many of the players speak poor or no English.

Henry Abbott wrote about this on Tuesday. He attributed it to both cultural factors and tallness of the population.
Someone above noted that Lithuanians have the same average height as Americans. So it could be that tallness is just an incorrect perception. OTOH, average height is really irrelavant here. What we need to know is the size of the tail on the bell curve of the heights of the Lithuanian population – perhaps they just have a really, really fat tail on the tall end!

The Lithuanian side of my family is indeed very tall. Alas, it didn’t make its way to me.
Someone above mentioned the example of the Dominican Republic. The D.R. has a population of roughly million, yet produces an extraordinary number of great baseball players: Vlad Guerrero, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Albert Pujols, Sammy Sosa.
They are just crazy about the sport. The D.R. has two minor leagues. One is the summer league (DSL) affiliated with MLB and in which many major league teams have two DSL affiliates. It is filled with Dominican kids who are 17, 18, 19 trying to get their shot at the big leagues. The other is the winter leage (DWL) that attracts MLB and minor league players in the offseason.

Within Europe, especially tall people can be found in the gritty ex-communist countries in the Baltic and the Balkan areas.
In the All-Star Game, Cleveland’s 7′-3″ Zydrunas Ilgauskas will carry on Lithuania’s proud basketball tradition. The heart of the 1988 Soviet Olympic team that beat America for the gold medal was made up not of Russians but of Lithuanians such as 7′-3″ Arvydas Sabonis, now with Portland. Lithuania has medalled in all three Olympic basketball tournaments since the tiny country regained its independence from the Soviet empire.
The other traditional center of European basketball dominance is the mountainous and war-torn Balkans in the southeast. The region will be represented in the All-Star Game by Peja Stojakovic, the 6′-10″ Sacramento forward from Serbia. Under its old name of Yugoslavia, Serbia medalled in the 1996 Olympics. Serbia’s neighbor and rival Croatia medalled in 1992.
Europeans tend to grow tallest where the climate is cold but not frigid. Writing in 1965 before the Dutch grew quite so tall, the prominent physical anthropologist Carlton Coon noted, “In mean stature, we find the tallest people in Scotland, Iceland, Scandinavia, the eastern Baltic region, and the Balkans, particularly Montenegro and Albania. In general, the crest of tallest stature runs on the cold side of the winter frost line.”
Coon pointed out that this pattern follows Bergmann’s Law, a rule of thumb in biology that states that within a species, animal populations living in the colder parts of the range tend to be larger and heavier than those living in the warmer parts.
Thus, the tallest Indian tribes in the New World live around the U.S.-Canadian border and in the southern cone of South America. Likewise, the tallest East Asians are found in southern Siberia and northern China, the latter being a region that NBA scouts find particularly interesting.
In extremely cold climates, however, protruding body parts such as long legs radiate too much heat. So, Eskimos are much less lanky than the Blackfoot Indians on the southern Canadian prairie. Likewise, Russians are not as tall as Lithuanians. Coon noted, “Stature decrease as one approaches northern Norway and the Urals.”
In contrast, the extremely thin Dinkas (NBA trainers could never bulk up [Manute] Bol enough for him to rebound effectively) have a very high surface-to-volume ratio, which allows body heat to dissipate rapidly in their equatorial climate.

Until recently, when it came to height and basketball interest, the Baltic and the Balkan regions were the only places where nature and nurture were aligned in Europe. The Mediterranean countries had high-powered professional basketball leagues, but the Mediterranean peoples weren’t as tall on average as the colder weather folks, while the Northerners were, on the whole, less interested in basketball. Over time, though, the southerners have grown taller (e.g., Pau Gasol), while the northerners have gotten more interested in basketball.

Re: San Pedro de Macoris’s baseball players
A lot of the people in the baseball-producing part of Dominican Republic have ancestors who migrated from Jamaica to work in the sugar cane fields. So, the average major league Dominican is a lot blacker than the average Dominican in the U.S. (who looks more like American-born Alex Fernandez than Dominican-born Sammy Sosa). Jamaicans play cricket or sprint or maybe soccer, while D.R. has been baseball crazy since at least the dictator Trujillo’s day, who imported a lot of top white and black American players in the 1930s to play in his winter league. In contrast, most African-Americans aren’t very interested in baseball anymore. So, the combination of black athleticism and a baseball intense culture makes D.R. the top producer of ballplayers per capita in the world, other than, perhaps, Cuba.

Perhaps the greatest concentration of talent in the world for a single major sport is American Samoa (population 58,000), which has sent so many players to the NFL. To paraphrase Trotsky, until rather recently, Samoans weren’t very interested in football (they mostly played rugby), but football was very interested in them, because they tend to be huge yet quite fast when in shape.

A fascinating question is: What happened to tall white American basketball players, the Bill Waltons, the Kevin McHales, the Rick Barrys, the Jerry Wests and so forth?
While there are white European and Canadian All-Stars these days, I don’t believe there has been a white American in the All Star game for a number of years.
I think the Olympics showed that white American parents are channeling their tall, athletic sons into sports other than basketball: volleyball, swimming, water polo, soccer goalie, quarterback, pitcher, and the like, partly out of the assumption that they can’t compete with blacks, partly because they want to keep their kids away from black culture.
For example, Sports Illustrated had a fascinating article on how when the great white 400m man Jeremy Wariner started sprinting, he was a shaggy-haired typical white kid who listened to alternative rock. To fit in with other sprinters, he’s turned himself into an Eminem-clone in looks and affect.
Lots of white parents don’t want to see that happen, so they guide their kids away from basketball and sprinting. (Conversely, the Williams sisters of tennis fame are alternative rock fans because that’s what all the other kids at the tennis academy listened to.)

Since the Williams sisters quite famously did not go to tennis academies, but were coached by their father, and did not even play tournaments until they turned pro, I think you might have to look for other factors.

I spent some time in Lithuania this summer, and I’ll come down firmly on the “National sport” side of the debate. I got no sense at all that Lithuanians were taller than Latvians, Estonians, or Americans. I’m 6′1″, and I didn’t see a greater proportion of Lithuanians that were taller than me, compared to any of the other countries I’ve been to.
However every basketball court I saw in Vilnius (and there were several in every park) was crowded all the time with serious pickup games going on. Clearly b’ball was something that athletic young Lithuanians wanted to play, and wanted to be good at.

Hm, Oregon is not at all basketball crazy, yet you could field a team with Kevin Love, Kyle Singler, Mike Dunleavy Jr, Damon and Salim Stoudamire, and other players to field a pretty good team. Maybe even a 4th place team, if they had a long history of focus on the game. That size of population is big enough.
It does make me kind of wonder, though, how would region-based US Olympics go?

Overall, California would completely dominate a Summer Olympics held among American states, even on a per capita basis. Olympic athletes listing a California hometown were represented at a per capita rate triple that of the other 49 states. The Summer Games have been held twice in Los Angeles, and, in general, Californians like the more obscure Olympic sports more than the football-obsessed rest of the country does (e.g., LA doesn’t have an NFL team).
Oregon’s strong suit would be distance running. Colorado probably has the fittest people in America on average.

I have a particular field of expertise, a topic that is important and interesting, one on which I’ve obviously thought longer and harder than just about anybody, so I have more to contribute on that topic than on any other.

Я бы сказала о монументальности, грандиозности некоторых сюжетов. А назвала бы – “нефильтрованный реал”. На мой взгляд, красота – это все-таки другое: лучшее, чистое, избранное, заставляющее трепетать и поражаться. Можно найти красоту во всем, но всё скопом – не есть красота. Имхо.

Человек устроен так, что еще с древних времен делал все, чтобы его жилище выглядело оригинально и красиво. Привычке украшать свое жилище по последнему слову моды, он не изменил, даже переселившись из холодных и сырых пещер в современные комфортабельные дома и офисы. Художественный уровень росписей жилищ человека рос вместе с развитием цивилизации. Вполне удачные попытки нанесения рисунков на стены своих домов можно встретить и у древних египтян, греков, римлян, славян и т. Д. Большей частью эти росписи носили бытовой и религиозный характер, выражая точку зрения человека как на мир “лунный”, где жили те, кто управлял им, так и “подлунный”, близкий и понятный ему. Современный человек имеет значительно больше возможностей расписывать свое жилье, так как ему заблагорассудиться. Изменилось общество, в котором стало на порядок больше свободы, усовершенствовались технологии, которые позволяют воплощать в жизнь самые, казалось бы, безумные поступки. В конце концов, за спиной сегодняшнего человека стоит огромная история росписи стен, на достижения которой он смело может опираться. За века культивирования человеком росписи стен сложилось несколько основных техник, с помощью которых, или на основе которых человек украшает стены домов. Расскажем об этом чуть подробнее. Одной из наиболее популярных техник росписи стен является фреска (от итальянского fresco, буквально – свежий). В этом случае живописное и яркое полотно пишется по сырой штукатурке. При этом используются краски, растворенные в воде. Когда фреска высыхает, на ее поверхности образуется тонкая пленка, которая защищает ее от неблагоприятных воздействий и делает ее фактически долговечной. Хотя фреска встречается уже среди находок, относящихся к Эгейской культуры, ее истинный расцвет приходится на эпоху европейского Ренессанса. В этот период художники, практиковавшие фресковую живопись, значительно усовершенствовали технологию ее создания. Так, они применяли в работе тщательно зачищенные грунтовые смеси с добавлением мраморной пыли. Нет надобности представлять именитых фресковых художников того времени: неповторимые Микеланджело Буонаротти и Рафаэль Санти, блистательный Дионисий, украсивший стены Ферапонтовой обители. Поэтому нет ничего удивительно, что фреска, соединившая в себе богатство красок, долговечность, масштаб и публичность изображения, легко вошла в христианскую культуру и заняла там очень достойное место, присутствуя как внутри христианских храмов, так и снаружи их. Ещё один вид настенного украшения носит название “а секко” (”a secco” по-итальянски “по сухому”), при котором роспись стен производится после того, как штукатурка уже просохла, используя перемешанные с известью краски на акриле или на масле либо растёртые с клеем или яйцом красящие порошки.
