Wanted: A Clear Timeline

Robert H. Reid for the Associated Press: “Iraq’s foreign minister insisted Sunday that any security deal with the United States must contain a ‘very clear timeline’ for the departure of U.S. troops.”

Appeasement!

Or, look, jokes aside how about if we were to respond to this by . . . negotiating a very clear timeline for the departure of U.S. troops from Iraq? I understand that the geostrategists of the American right are loathe to abandon their neoimperial fantasies but surely the cynical political opportunists of the conservative movement can see the appeal of declaring victory.

Maybe the cynical political opportunists can – but not Dick Cheney. For him and his cronies, the oil is the key issue – as well as the ability to place a large military force on Iran’s border. You know, Iran – that place with the oil and gas?

We need to stop thinking that the Iraq war was done solely for the political convenience of the Republicans domestically. It wasn’t.

    Hello:

All this posturing (errr….contorting?) over agreeing on a time line (or even using the word) is the direct result of the logical box you put yourself into when you demonize someone whose position is different from yours rather then discussing the differences.

You are then forced to defend your position regardless of the current facts because you set up the opposition position as organically faulty.

However, if you approach your opponents position based on facts (not simply based on the position) you can continue to move forward as facts change.

Let’s take the time line issue as the example…If the right had simply came out and said ‘of course there should be a time line for withdrawal once it’s safe for us to leave’ rather then ‘time line = traitor’ then they could have fought the logical battle on the ’safe to leave’ portion rather then the meaning of ‘time line.’

Well, the Right has to think of how to adopt Obama’s policy while convincing the moronic press that he’s adopting their strategy. At the same time, they have to figure out how to actually continue the war until 2012, so that they can argue that we can’t change horses midstream.
