Transit Porn Time Travel

Dave Alpert brings us the past of the future of Metro in the Washington, DC area — an expansion proposal that was in circulation circa the mid-1990s.

So they’ll dig an extra tunnel under the Potomac, build a Metro Beltway, and extend the Green Line all the way to a mysterious Park and Ride in Baltimore, but they STILL won’t put a station in Laurel? WTF? Half the readers of this blog could come up with a better Metro fantasy map than that, while blind drunk.

But right now I’d be happy if the Red Line could just go 2 consecutive days without a major meltdown.

Even more maddening is this plan for a subway in Seattle. It was proposed in 1920, and 88 years later, we’ve still got nada.

WMATA cannot even manage what they have now. Imagine what would happen if they had to manage that? Utter disaster in the making. I personally am hoping for the return of street cars.

Ah, the 90’s, when the Orange/Blue westbound trains had the pleasingly alliterative endpoints of “Vienna/Van Dorn”. Franconia(/Springfield, ha) was one of those funny striped “future planned station” bits on the edge of the map.

Meanwhile, I WISH there was a durn Potomac Yard station. If I’m going to lose my Capitol dome view because of that development, then I’d like to at least get a walkable Metro stop as a trade!
