The Choice on Transportation

Brookings’ Robert Puentas does a useful side-by-side comparison of the two candidates’ proposals on federal transportation policy. Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about it is the sheer gap in the quantity of policy idea. Obama has all kinds of proposals for this and that, whereas McCain has total blanks on a number of questions and vague proposals on many others.

You think Palin will be surprised when she’s comes to DC. It’ll be the first time she’ll see
    1. A building more than 10 stories high.
    2. Horseless carriages aka cars.
    3. Indoor plumbing

    Matthew,

Based on that analysis, neither candidate shows any signs of enthusiasm for the kind of major changes in transportation policy that you favor. With respect to intercity rail, Obama says merely that he “supports” high-speed rail, but offers no proposals for funding for otherwise promoting it. And his statement that “we need to reform Amtrak to improve accountability” suggests that he may favor cuts in Amtrak funding and services.

There’s nothing about any significant expansion or promotion of mass transit either. The only concrete proposals either candidate has made are in support of cars, highways and driving. In particular, Obama’s proposals to spend lots of federal money on funding and incentives for electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

By all means, lets start talikng about transportation. It focuses the mind off of that kicked-in-the-gonads feeling that McCain delivered to Obama and his believers today.

  4. Ken Riley Says:

This doesn’t really surprise me since McCain doesn’t believe government has a role to play in most things. The market will take care of this, right? See Adam Smith, etc., etc. (Who, as an aside, I think is widely misread by those few who have read him at all. If you put Wealth of Nations in the context of his broader writing, specifically, A Theory of Moral Sentiments, you find someone who would be appalled at what happens in his name.)
