Jim Lehrer and Ruth Marcus talk about John McCain’s lobbying ties to the Georgian government:
JIM LEHRER: Yes. What about the McCain lobbyist who lobbied for Georgia and is now McCain’s number-one foreign affairs adviser? Is that going to come up to bite McCain more, do you think?
RUTH MARCUS: So the Obama campaign hopes. I look at this on two different levels. On the substantive level, anybody who knows Senator McCain knows that he would have the same views on Georgia no matter what lobbyist came to talk to him. He feels this one in his bones. And he wasn’t going to — this is not a shift in position because some lobbyist came and whispered in his ear.
It’s worth noting the extraordinary level of benefit of the doubt that John McCain tends to get from the press, including from people who aren’t necessarily hugely sympathetic to his policy agenda. Normally reporters are ruthless about the motives behind politicians’ decisions, but everything McCain does is above question. Beyond that, how much better is it for McCain to be the kind of guy whose views on U.S.-Russia relations are identical to those that you would have if you were a paid agent of a foreign government? Of course it’s possible that America’s interests vis-à-vis Russia are identical to Georgia’s interests, but that doesn’t seem very likely to me.

I am surprised she didn’t go on to mention that those were awesome, America-serving bones, the kind of bones that not just any politician would have, not the kind of ordinary politician to get involved in some cheap banking scandal in the 1980s, but a towering, magical figure, a Leader whose bones cry out to us of honor, truth, and Maverickness.

Why is the concept of conflict of interest so hard to understand? It’s not always about the quid pro quo or puppet strings or the whisper in the ear. If you surround yourself with people who are paid to advance agendas, it is perfectly natural to be influenced by their points of view.

Marcus is right on this one. This line of attack is stupid. As Matt has pointed out, McCain’s crazy, hawkish approach to the Grogia issue is of a piece with his crazy, hawkish approach across the board. It would certainly be better if his advisor wasn’t a paid agent of Georgia but it really doesn’t matter in this particular case. The dude has a hard on for epic conflict.
Now the oh-so-reluctant-to-talk-about-his-POW-experience-maverick making up a religiously inspiring anecdote about his captivity to get evangelical votes is a story a reasonable press would jump on in a heartbeat. Phony religious conviction and crass expoitation of his war experience is pretty damn contemptible.

Does the press give McCain a pass in a lot of cases when they shouldn’t? Yes. Should they give him a pass here? Yes. McCain WOULD support Georgia, regardless of who’s on his foreign policy team.
If this brings up an issue, it more accurately brings up the issue of how badly lobbyists do their job. If I’m Georgia, I want my money back. Why am I paying you $900,000 a year (or whatever the figure is) to “convince” a politician of something he already believes? If Scheunemann was actually doing his job right, he’d have been busting his hump to get on Obama’s foreign policy team, not McCain’s.
This is less a story of “McCain’s campaign is filled with former lobbyists” and more a story of “McCain’s campaign is filled with lobbyists who don’t deliver useful result to their clients.” Do you want a President who hires guys with no track record of ever accomplishing what they were hired to do?

If McCain’s bones have been reading up on small nationalities, I’m surprised he hasn’t come out with detailed plans for Chechnya. How about Nagorno-Karabakh? Or could it be that clever lobbyists, recognizing another GOP with road rage problems, just plugged him into Georgia? Aggression is a gateway drug, after all.
Unfortunately, instead of posing the question as: would anybody give a fuck about Georgia if the country hadn’t become a defense industry market and hadn’t ladled up money to D.C. lobbyists - we have to pretend that we know what McCain’s bones are all about. But not his boners - the Press has too much respect for the privacy of individuals to go into something like that!

Wait, I agree with Ruth Marcus on this. It doesn’t matter who McCain has around him. He would stake out the most belligerent, careless, diplomatically short-sighted position possible at the earliest moment. That is what he does, and it doesn’t matter who his advisors are.

bdbd - your McCain quote has the opposite effect to me. It wasn’t on his own that McCain came up with that tidbit - that sounds like a soundbite spoonfed by a lobbyist.
The rule that you only bribe those who you have to bribe has long been out of fashion in D.C. - otherwise, big businesses would have to open their wallets quite so largely for the GOP. After all, why bribe somebody who has already swallowed the ideology? But since the ideology is - everybody has a price, and I want mine - you definitely need to keep the money flowing. Scheuerman wasn’t going to volunteer to represent the great democracy of Georgia - the greatest democracy of all times, except for Iraq and the U.S. - out of the goodness of his heart. His targeting of McCain doubtless converged with Defense Industry PACs bundling up nice presents for the McCain campaign - and if he loses, for the good old Senator himself.

The concern is not so much that McCain’s ties to the government of Georgia influence his position. It’s more that those ties might influence Georgia’s actions. The government of Georgia just did something outstandingly reckless, under the apparent assumption that the US would bail them out. Did the McCain campaign encourage’s Georgia’s folly?
Note, in this connection, that it is proufoundly to the advantage of the McCain campaign to have a crisis that gives him an opportunity to posture as a foriegn policy tough guy.

What’s particularly appalling about Marcus’ line is that she was the Post’s beat writer on campaign finance during the 90’s and she was the epitome of a reporter who didn’t believe that a politician could do anything that wasn’t motivated by campaign contributions…

I wonder if Marcus has done a study of whether it’s all John McCain’s bones in concert which makes him speak so purely of spirit on foreign policy matters, or whether there are different policies and philosophies scattered in different bones — you know, is there a femoral approach to the Caucusus crisis which diverges from the scapular view?

We know that McCain will pursue the most aggressive foreign policy possible. But the man is so clueless, it’s not as if that path will always be clearly defined in every region/crisis/issue. There’s plenty of room there for substantial influence from lobbyists. This is even more obvious in the domestic forum, where McCain is not only clueless, but also doesn’t give a damn. Comments like this one just give the lie the ‘fair and balanced’ media crap. God these people are terrible.

Marcus is being groomed as the “house liberal” for the NewsHour’s Friday pundit chat. On almost every issue, her views and Rich Lowry’s were indistinguishable. McCain’s saber-rattling on Georgia “won the week”, etc.

People keep saying this, but I have yet to meet one person who has actually talked to John McCain in a universe where the Georgia/Russia incident happened and one of the top members of his foreign policy team was not a former lobbyist for Georgia. Everyone who says what McCain WOULD do in that situation simply doesn’t know what they are talking about.

I’m with bab23. Conflict of interest is conflict of interest whether or not it has a direct influence on the candidate’s agenda or not.
And, after watching Ruth Marcus on The News Hour last Friday, I can attest that she does seem to be giving McCain a lot of leeway — I can’t decide if it’s because she genuinely is that muddled up about what she thinks about him, of if she really disagrees with him and is trying to be even handed by going light on him. It was kind of baffling to me. Believe it or not, I was much more pleased with what I took to be fair coverage from the young National Review guy.
