On the Road

mcmatt.jpg

Just putting up a quick post from the Atlanta airport to let y’all know that I’m waiting for my flight to Minneapolis to go cover the Republican Convention with some other members of the ThinkProgress team. The exigencies of travel and convention coverage may alter the blogging schedule somewhat for the next few days but I’m hoping to bring some high-quality content to the world including, one hopes, some candid camera footage of what conservative activists really think. To that end, in National Airport (or “Reagan National Airport” as our conservative friends say) earlier I picked up this McCain for president cap — I’ve already been complimented on it several times since reaching Atlanta.

your glasses are backwards, i think.

  2. drjimcooper Says:

I take back my advice on your old blog. Grow the beard back immediately.

  3. Pat Says:

    Are you ‘infiltrating’ the RNC?

  4. Turdlet Says:

This is what jockeying for the Pres-o-dent McCain press secretary gig looks like… that or an example of out-of-control ennui…

  5. aleks Says:

Anything to make friends, eh Matt?

By the way, it occurred to me that the real purpose of the Palin pick is to put to rest fears about McCain’s age. If he’s having a mid-life crisis now, he’ll clearly live to 144.

  6. lfv Says:

Can you get a pair of glasses that are even bigger, please?

  7. tomemos Says:

Wow, it seems that misspellings even manage to infiltrate pictures of yourself. That’s a feat.

  8. Chris Says:

So they’re selling hats with the McCain logo reversed? Or do you have a retarded webcam?

  9. SHF Says:

I hate to show my ignorance, but I don’t understand the joke on the cap. I actually can’t even tell if it’s pro- or anti-McCain. I assume anti- but….

  10. pj Says:

I always say National Airport. Anyone who questions that just tell them it was originally named after the 1st President of the United States.

  11. rupert Says:

    I prefer my amabO cap

  12. dB Says:

Be sure to give Ambinder his hat back when you’re done with it.

  13. Becquer Says:

You should wear it like a rally hat. McCain’s going to need all the rallying in the world, including some divine intervention, to win this election.

  14. raft Says:

drjimcooper: “I take back my advice on your old blog. Grow the beard back immediately.”

I’ve encountered cases like this before. It’s his girlfriend’s doing. Matt, she’s not worth it. Ditch the chick and become a man again.

  15. joejoejoe Says:

Vampire-Americans everywhere denounce your mirror image.

  16. snowballs Says:

    Travel safe Matt.

As a traditional conservative voter, I’m eagerly tuned into your blog again during this election for an impartial and fair pov.

Bring back some good stuff from the convention.

  17. 24AheadDotCom Says:

Anyone have a wanted poster the picture could be put into?

I strongly suspect that the only thing MattY is going to be capable of doing is a lukewarm MaxBlumenthal type of sleazy video. Anyone else who’s going and who actually wants to do a public service and some reporting should try to ask McCain or a surrogate this.

And, the last thing I expect is for MattY to succeed where Newsweek, Ambinder, and some bloggers failed/”failed”: 24ahead.com/blog/archives/007842.html

  18. Evil Twin Says:

I had forgotten that 24 was the new name of the eternally racist Lone Wacko. Shame on me.

  19. beowulf Says:

Grow out the beard, you look like a serial killer.

  20. BGC Says:

    Does it burn?

  21. John Emerson Says:

I’ve put some links here for anyone who wants to follow police activity at the RNC. Some preemptive arrest have already been made.

  22. ferd Says:

It’s a Narcissus cap. Printed backward for mirror gazing.

  23. m Says:

that hat is a 501(c)4 violation

  24. Don Williams Says:

ER.. if you’re trying to infiltrate a hostile environment, you usually don’t brag about it in Advance on an Internet blog and post your picture.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for an ass-whipping administered by some drunken shitkickers from Texas, this is about the best approach I’ve seen.

Especially if Megan, Ross or Michael O’Hanlon see you.

  25. Anthony Damiani Says:

So is the cap actually backwards, or was this shot in a mirror, or has it been H-flipped in photoshop?

Because I think I’d kind of like to push the McCain=Backwards meme, with a hat of my own….

  26. Leee Says:

Someone tell Ashton that mirror-reversed caps are the new trucker hats.

  27. Clara Says:

Don’t bother showing up here in the Twin Cities — all the media have already evidently decamped for New Orleans. Don’t think any Republicans will show either. You’ve got to feel a little sorry for poor old Tim Pawlenty…

  28. Chris Dornan Says:

Why do I think it has been photoshopped…

I think you should show it next to something else with writing on it–say a big billboard.

  29. godoggo Says:

OK, this is deliberate ridicule bait. No fun. I ain’t biting.

  30. Don Williams Says:

    1) Matthew should remember the First Rule of Crossdressing –from The Rocky Horror Picture Show:

First One Who Screams Gets Shot in the Tits

    2) But if Matthew REALLY wants the story, he might try wearing black fishnet stockings and hot pants at the Republican National Convention. Larry Craig presumably left some lonely hearts when he moved on. Ask Andrew for some intros.

And if Matthews admits –behind closed doors — that he’s really a liberal blogger, that will just add the thrill of “Forbidden Fruit” to the soiree.

  31. drjimcooper Says:

that hat is a 501(c)4 violation

It just dawned on me that he reversed the hat image for exactly that reason.

  32. joel hanes Says:

Whether there’s a convention or just a pro-forma business meeting, there’s good blogging to be done in the Twin Cities over the next few days. Lindsay and Jane are doing some primary reporting, but I look forward to your discussion of Sheriff Fletcher’s pre-emptive raids, the street arrests, and the justifications for and contents of the warrants. And the starring role that Federal agents and Federal monies played in the investigation and the raids.

  33. Richard Steven Hack Says:

His hat being backward is appropriate, because his whole approach to this thing has been backwards.

“Anyone have a wanted poster the picture could be put into?”

I think a Simpson’s cartoon would be more appropriate. No self-respecting criminal would look like this on a wanted poster. When I was first arrested, all the other guys in the Federal holding facility said I didn’t look like a bank robber. Six months later, they said I did. That’s what jail does to you.

Meanwhile, if Matt isn’t careful, he’ll end up like these guys:

    Dozens Detained Ahead of Convention

Report: Massive, warrantless raids on peace protesters in Minneapolis, ahead of RNC.
    http://www.boingboing.net/2008/08/30/report-massive-warra.html

  34. Notorious P.A.T. Says:

Sheriff Fletcher’s pre-emptive raids, the street arrests, and the justifications for and contents of the warrants

That’s probably the best reason for a disguise. With police detaining people for no reason, you’ll need all the help you can get, even if you don’t plan on making Obama-sympathetic posts.

  35. DBX Says:

Our conservative “friends” don’t say “Reagan National Airport”, they say “Reagan AIrport”, and they get very uppity when the word National even appears in the title. I know. I hear it all the time. I also see it on the Internet. A while back I noticed that Wikipedia had gone to “Washington-Reagan” for referring to National. I tried to alter it to “Washington-Reagan National” on a couple of pages. Within a half an hour it was changed back again.

  36. Richard Steven Hack Says:

    More on the raids here:

    RNC Protests: Police Raid Headquarters
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/31/rnc-protests-police-raid_n_122787.html

Glenn Greenwald reports that it is increasingly clear the federal government is involved in raids on protesters at the Republican National Convention:

As the police attacks on protesters in Minnesota continue — see this video of the police swarming a bus transporting members of Earth Justice, seizing the bus and leaving the group members stranded on the side of the highway — it appears increasingly clear that it is the Federal Government that is directing this intimidation campaign. Minnesota Public Radio reported yesterday that “the searches were led by the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office. Deputies coordinated searches with the Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

  37. John Emerson Says:

Photographic evidence that the FBI was there (page top bottom).

  38. Richard Steven Hack Says:

Very effective quote from Glenn’s column:

During the Olympics just weeks ago, there was endless hand-wringing over the efforts by the Chinese Government to squelch dissent and incarcerate protesters. On August 21, The Washington Post fretted:

Six Americans detained by police this week could be held for 10 days, according to Chinese authorities, who appear to be intensifying their efforts to shut down any public demonstrations during the final days of the Olympic Games. . . .

Chinese Olympic officials announced last month that Beijing would set up zones where people could protest during the Games, as long as they had received permission. None of the 77 applications submitted was approved, however, and several other would-be protesters were stopped from even applying.

On August 2, The Post gravely warned:

Behind the gray walls and barbed wire of the prison here, eight Chinese farmers with a grievance against the government have been consigned to Olympic limbo.

Their indefinite detainment, relatives and neighbors said, is the price they are paying for stirring up trouble as China prepares to host the Beijing Games. Trouble, the Communist Party has made clear, will not be permitted.

Would The Washington Post ever use such dark and accusatory tones to describe what the U.S. Government does? Of course it wouldn’t. Yet how is our own Government’s behavior in Minnesota any different than what the Chinese did to its protesters during the Olympics (other than the fact that we actually have a Constitution that prohibits such behavior)? And where are all the self-righteous Freedom Crusaders in our nation’s establishment organs who were so flamboyantly criticizing the actions of a Government on the other side of the globe as our own Government engages in the same tyrannical, protest-squelching conduct with exactly the same motives?

    Welcome to Communist China, folks!

  40. S.P. Gass Says:

If your candid footage reveals anyone saying anything inappropriate, they can probably just apologize and call you a left-wing nutcase.

At least, that’s how the ex-DNC chair handled his experience.

  41. Sirkowski Says:

Joel, keep an eye out at Unfogged.com. No promises, but we’re working on a legal defense fund.
