No One Could Have Predicted…

… that having the United States of America assist an Ethiopan invasion-and-occupation of Somalia in order to depose an Islamist government could further radicalize Somalis and push them into the arms of al-Qaeda. After all, most people welcome foreign invasions of their country.

This is not possible. The GOP told us that The Surge ™ gave us Victory in Iraq and also could still give us Victory, and that the Victory in Iraq would send a ‘message’ to terrorists the world over. Such weird adherence to rationalism and evidence by Mr. Yglesias seems harmful to the Spirit of The Surge ™. Surely all we need to do is supplement broadcasts to Somalia informing the natives of The Surge ™, after which they will see the errors of their ways.

  2. Peter Says:

There’s relatively little substance in the article. It says in essence that the Somalia militant leaders might end up with closer ties to al-Qaeda. Not much if anything has actually happened, however.

  3. Swan Says:

If we’re going to do stuff like this, we just have to provide a lot of aid, too. We have to make the new developments really be in the people’s best interest, and not just kick down governments to help a few Americans in their hobby of running extremely large businesses.

People see through the whitewash often enough, but most especially when they’re pushed too far– the idea that can’t or never do is just a conservative conceit.

  4. Matvey Says:

We were going to be greeted with flowers and candy, except the Somalis don’t have flowers and candy. Oops?

  5. Freedom Fry Says:

Seventeen years without a functioning government? I can’t imagine how people can live in a situation like that. I’m pretty sure that by now, they’d take any form of government as long as it guaranteed some kind of safety and order. But as long as foreigners are in their midst, I can see how it’s easy to rally against the Ethiopians and continue fighting for several more years. In hind sight, it might have been easier to allow the Islamists to establish some sort of order in the region.

  6. Aleks Says:

Didn’t the Ethiopians know the Somali word for “liberators?”

Oh shit, did our boys know the Arab word for “liberators?” Maybe this all could have been prevented if we hadn’t fired those translators.
