TPM reader JS has an idea:
I wish team Obama would drive the elitism point home by doing the math on how much of a tax break John and Cindy McCain would get from McCain’s plan vs the avg American (at the US median household income). And then for good measure show what would happen with Obama’s plan.
This would keep the theme of McCain’s elitism and Republican elitist economics in the press for a while longer.
Fortunately, the Wonk Room took a look at just this issue back in June based on 2006 income data. Back then, Barack and Michelle Obama earned a bit less than $1 million while John and Cindy McCain earned almost $6.5 million. Both families, in other words, were doing pretty well but the McCains were a lot richer. Indeed, John McCain would deliver to himself a tax cut worth over $370,000 — well more than the average family earns and indeed even a lot more than McCain’s annual expenditures on servants. Unfortunately this doesn’t include the data on a family closer to the American average, which would probably be more interesting to most people than the question of the top 0.1% versus the top 0.5%. What’s more, it’s actually somewhat misleading in terms of a comparison between the financial standing of the Obama and McCain families, since the Obamas were earning much less than this until very recently.

This needs to be done and has been mentioned in a variety of forums. I just hope that when it is done it appears in so simple and indisputable form that everyone really can see it.

McCain’s tax cut is bigger than the median income of Americans. And, for that matter, Obama’s tax cut under McCain’s plan is approximately the median income. That is to say that everyone earning about the same or more than the Obama’s will be provided with a tax cut equal to or greater than the entire salary of half the country.

Exactly how it’s been presented in the past…

Whoever made that graphic probably should’ve compressed it as a gif and not a jpg. The jpg format is better for photos, but if you try to compress something with that much white space in jpg form, you get all that smudgy cloudiness around your text.
(Things I learned while working on War or Car.)

OT: When saving out in JPEG format from any image-editing program (e.g., Photoshop), one can adjust the amount of JPEG compression to minimize the smudgy cloudiness (a.k.a. “artifacting.) Of course, the file size will be slightly larger as a result.

That graphic needs to be in an ad. NOW.

How in the world can Obama’s tax cut benefit someone who makes 6 million a year? Or even 1 million a year? Just curious.
August 24th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
How much tax did Obama and McCain each pay the last few years?
I think I know which one is paying more—and I think I know which one will continue to pay more regardless of which plan is implemented.

I know that a lot of progressives find these issues of taxation pressingly important - and they are - but I don’t see this as a very big issue to most voters. It’s the same reason I don’t think that most people care about the fact that McCain has X number of houses. So the guy has a lot of money. Big deal.
Using McCain’s inability to remember the number of houses makes him look out of touch and old. That’s a good way to attack it. Making him look rich? So what?
Oh, and I’d also like to comment on this whole “elitism” thing. When most people use the world “elitist”, they don’t mean it in a class sense. They mean that the elitist looks down on everyone else. Just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he does that; it’s a personality thing. If you can take some good quotes to make it look like he looks down on other people, that’s a good way to make him look elitist. If you talk about how he owns fancy shoes, that’s just silly.

Ah, Garrett, you raise the old question: lack of integrity or lack of intelligence?
BTW, my six-week-old infant 3 pounds in the last week, but I’m not worried because I lost 5.

An ad highlighting this would be devastating: “John McCain would deliver to himself a tax cut worth over $370,000 — well more than the average family earns and indeed even a lot more than McCain’s annual expenditures on servants”
Can you imagine? John McCain wants to give himself a tax cut to pay for all of his servants - and still have enough to left over to buy your house (assuming your home isn’t a McMansion). No one would be confused about what that means.

What happens when you add the Bidens onto that list?
August 25th, 2008 at 2:41 am
Really, I don’t see the need for a gif, either. You could just have an HTML table. Let’s see if the comments allow this (I wish there were a preview button — ah well, here goes nothing): John andCindy McCainBarack andMichelle ObamaSavings UnderMCCAINTax Plan$373,429$49,392Savings UnderOBAMATax Plan$5,641$6,124
Maybe a “embed source” box by it for the original creator if the creator wants it widely propagated, like the ones next to youtube videos.
Yeah, a gif would have worked, but the whole “images instead of text” is a pet peeve of mine. Not a big deal in terms of bandwidth waste compared to streaming videos and all that, but it still irritates me.

Okay. Let me see if the PRE tag works!
Here’s what I was trying to do, inside the pre-tag.
John andCindy McCainBarack andMichelle ObamaSavings UnderMCCAINTax Plan$373,429$49,392Savings UnderOBAMATax Plan$5,641$6,124
This probably won’t work either. Ah well.
