McCain Against Reproductive Freedom

There’s substantial evidence out there that a non-trivial number of John McCain’s supporters are pro-choice voters who believe that McCain is also pro-choice. Even among well-informed elites, there’s a substantial sentiment that maybe despite McCain’s lifelong voting record he’s “secretly” pro-choice or some such. Sara Blustain has the cure for this kind of thinking:

That, however, is simply not true. There is no “latitude” in McCain’s position on abortion. Interviews with dozens of people who have dealt with him on the issue–pro-choice and pro-life activists, Hill staffers, McCain confidants, pollsters, and staffers–along with a two-and-a-half-decade-long perfectly anti-abortion voting record, make that clear. And his record on related issues, like contraception, is no better.

You have to read the whole article to get the details, but suffice it to say that despite various public statements that have confused people, McCain has a long record as a legislator and it’s one that’s uniformly hostile to birth control access and abortion rights.

What does it mean to be “hostile to birth control access”? Contraceptives are available in most retail outlets around the country–has Mccain taken some action to change that?

  2. fletc3her Says:

I don’t know whether McCain supports this or not, but it is indicative of the strategies the right is using to restrict access to birth control in this country.

In Washington State there is an effort being made to allow pharmacists and people who work at drug stores to abstain from selling any products which run contrary to their religion in some way. This is the start of one of these slippery slopes which the right hopes they can start us all down.

First, this breaks the basic contract of the pharmacy. The pharmacy is given the exclusive right to sell drugs which are illegal to sell or possess without a valid prescription. In exchange for this lucrative right the pharmacy promises to carry and dispense a full range of drugs. It is the responsibility of the pharmacy to be able to fill most prescriptions at once.

With this rule the patient will now be forced to research which pharmacies will fill their prescriptions. And the answer may vary depending on what pharmacists are on staff. Some pharmacies won’t dispense Plan B, some may go as far as not dispensing any birth control pills, or won’t carry AIDS drugs. Eventually, we could find access even to over the counter birth control made more difficult since each purchase will require negotiating with the clerks about who can ring it up.

  3. Luke Says:

Thomas, it means exactly what it sounds like it means: McCain wants to make it as hard as possible to get birth control.

Why? Because removing birth control from the situation returns women’s reproductive freedom to early 19th-century levels; presumably, it will return gender politics to their state in the early 19th century.

He wants this because he’s a gigantic misogynist. He seems to actively dislike women, including his wives and daughters.

  4. Casey Says:

One question I have: is it worth more to Obama and the Dems to convince pro-choice voters of McCain’s anti-choice bonifides or keep evangelical support low by allowing the pro-choice myth to linger?
Also, Thomas, you’re right, this can be a confusing issue. But high quality birth control that is most effective (ie. the stuff that doesn’t need to be applied in the heat of the moment, like the pill) is also the most effective. McCain doesn’t support low-income support for this type of birth control, so poor people end up with hard to use methods that people of all incomes and educations occasionally screw up (like a condom that tears).
