I agree with Matt on this. It WAS a helluva speech. The kind I wish he had made in 2004 when it would have made a difference.
I’ll note this too. Between Kerry’s, Clinton’s, and Biden’s speeches last night, I think that the tenor of this campaign will be much different than 2004. There will be no fear I think, of going after McCain and tying him to Bush which McCain has already done himself. Obama’s speech will be an indication I hope of that strategy tonight. This is what has to happen if we are going to win. No kids gloves.
Not only was it a good speech, it’s a narrative I hope the Obama campaign runs hard with:
Candidate McCain vs. Senator McCain.
I like it because it reaches out to indepenents and moderates who like the idea of McCain (Senator McCain), but are not aware of his flip-flops and general sucking up to the extreme right (Candidate McCain). It’s a great narrative — former moderate/maverick sells his soul for a shot at the presidency.
And the cable talking heads kept going on and on about how no one in the convention was tearing down Bush and McCain.
That would be the same cable networks who thought Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman, Brian Wlliams, Tom Brokaw, Norah O’Donell, Rahcel Maddow, Pat Buchanan and so on talking was a better use of their time than showing Kerry’s speech…
Sheesh it was 13 freakin’ minutes. They coudln’t spare that much time? It would be intersting to add up the amount of time the networks devoted to the actial speeches vs their analysts talking.
Yep, If Kerry had made speeches like this in ‘04 he and his new VP Barack Obama (who replaced the scandal plagued Edwards) would be running for re-election!

I also like this meme, but for a different reason. You have a lot of Senators who will be campaigning for this ticket, not the least of whom are the two people on the ticket themselves. It gives them a chance to throw out the “he’s a good friend of mine line” while also kind of saying “we’re not attacking our friend, we’re attacking the Mr. Hyde that he’s turned into”.
There are other benefits as well. In attacking candidate McCain, they can almost pity him. “He used to be a great guy, but then he just kind of lost it and turned crazily to the right to satisfy those lunatics”. They can demean the candidate without it sounding like they’re demeaning the man. It’s a rhetorical two-step, but I think it works.
Not that “respectable” analysts will cover it, for fear of their careers – but objectively, Kucinich went after the GOP, in a very strong way, got the crowd INCREDIBLY fired up, and made some great points, in a fiery way.
So, while you moan about the networks “disappearing” Kerry’s speech, have you not done the same to Kucinich?

In advance of Barack Obama’s speech tonight, I was curious to see how his other most prominent speeches looked:

All this and it has the virtue of being true.
