He was as shallow a schmuck as to ever get elected. He inflicted a terrible loss upon Mary Jo and her family, and he probably really shouldn’t have had the chance to redeem himself in a public forum, but as Caroline recounted, he has had an amazingly productive, useful career.
Fine, Jeffrey—so he got drunk and he fucked up and since then, he’s spent his entire lifetime atoning for this sin. What the hell have you done for your country lately? Asshole.
this comment stream is quite high-minded; I thought that baseball blogs had the monopoly on vicious personal attacks. I guess that I have neglected deep political commentary for awhile….
Two things struck me tonight. One, is that the older pundits think the night belonged to Teddy. The younger bloggers think it was a passing of the torch to the Obamas.
Two, if Obama/Biden are elected, RI gov will appoint the new senator. Could it be Patrick Kennedy, and another passing of the torch?
Mary Jo Kopechne died eight years before I was born. I’m a good piece older than Yglesias. Do you know how wierd this stuff sounds to people without a hearing aid?
If anything about the convention has stood out for me thusfar, it’s the reminder that even top-tier politicians in this country are such stilted, uninspiring public speakers (with Ted being given a pass this time around).
I speak in public quite frequently, and I was very impressed by the “naturalness” of Michelle Obama’s speaking voice. Kennedy and McCaskill have an old-timey booming rhetoric that comes from the days before microphones. Biden is more “natural” in speech, but loses his flow and can sound incoherent. But MO was able to move smoothly between an informal kitchen table talk to beautiful long and perfectly balanced and eloquent sentences.
It takes a lot of work, practice and focus to sound so “natural” and unforced as MO did tonight. I thought that she was better than Reagan who won two terms on his speaking chops and not much more.
Not just good, but great. Sen. Kennedy was my senator for the first half of my life, and after many first hand encounters I can say there has never been a more hard working person in the U.S. senate. As for M.J. Kopechne, If you visit the scene of the accident as I did, you would realize that was an accident that could have happened to any one of us, and there was zero chance that Kennedy could have saved her.You might want to check out the congressional record to find out what he has been up to since then.

It’s definitely better than seeing him up and doing something else.
Thank you, thank you. And a round of applause for MattY too.

Perhaps, but there was that little problem of him leaving the scene of the accident.
