Thanks to several commenters for giving me the answer to this morning’s robot football question — the game I was looking for was Cyberball. Apparently it was primarily known to many people as an Atari game or else as a freestanding arcade game, but Jaleco released a NES port in 1992 which is what I played.
Others brought up Mutant League Football in this regard. That is similar in various respects but, obviously, in the MLF you’re talking about mutant players rather than robots which makes all the difference.

Maybe this game is why you’re so concerned about robots taking over….

I use this post to declare that River City Ransom rocks and no NES game has better BGM than Mega Man 2.

I think Tecmo bowl still reigns supreme as the greatest video football game.

I’m actually going with Tecmo Super Bowl as the greatest video football game of all time – all 28 NFL teams (at the time) and one of the first to allow gamers to play an entire season with saved stats.
But a close second is 10-Yard Fight.

Robots and mutants are interchangeable for this purpose: being able to create a video game where you could “destroy” the competitors. Obviously that wouldn’t work if said competitors were humans. Many games, especially in that era, were about killing aliens, mutants, out-of-control machines, fictional creatures… or, if it had to be humans, evil humans who clearly deserved it.

It should be pointed out that Cyberball 2072 is on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 if you’re interested in playing it and don’t want to resort to emulators. Midway Arcade Treasures 2 also has Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, and A.P.B, albeit not all perfectly executed.

Actually, Mutant League Football included robots, including one on the cover art of the game. More mistakes like this and you’ll make the NYT editorial page in no time.

Brewtown beat me to the corrective punch, so I will merely state that Mutant League Football was effin’ awesome and that my preferred method of victory was to kill enough of the opposing team to force the refs to call the game.

There was a great NES game called BaseWars.
It was robot baseball, and whenever a runner got tagged, it resulted in a battle. If you destroyed three of the opponent’s players, you won by default. Also you could equip your players with weapons, pitching cannons, etc. Great game.

It’s not difficult to imagine who the target audience for Mega Man 9 is. A good number of gamers came of age during the heyday of the NES, when both challenge and level design encouraged multiple playthroughs of titles. These
