Cutting-Edge Public Policy Research

It seems the Urban Institute recently released a report concluding that public policy would be better if it were based on evidence. Really. “Beyond Ideology, Politics, and Guesswork: The Case for Evidence-Based Policy”.

And guess what? I agree. Policy should be based on evidence. I suppose it’s mostly a sad commentary on the state of our politics that this needs to be said.

Is it really a commentary on our “politics” or is it specifically on the misuse of public policy as practiced by ideological right-wing Republicans where, as in the Soviet Union under the Communist Party, the needs and interest of the Party came first above all, and everything else came last.

It’s a sad commentary on the state of our educational system.

  3. Marshall Says:

Nope, not so. Policy should be based on politics and a major difference between the liberal and conservative coalitions in this country is that conservatives understand that and liberals don’t. Like the Urban Institute and Matthew Yglesias.

As a progressive I find the Bush administration guilty of invading a soveriegn nation therefore Bush and his crime family should be jailed based in all of the evidence brought against them and by the same token john Mcwars should not be elected president because he is the exact replica of the Bush crime family just different faces in the same crowd, there`s my evidence………

Now if only they can spend the necessary millions lobbying the collection of stagecoach tippers we call a Government, then maybe the Urban Institute can yoke us away from whim based policy towards evidence based policy.

Ah, see there’s a good reason why we should have politics-based policy. Where do we get the millions with which to do the requisite lobbying? Why, from the returns that we will harvest once we control the government’s apparatus. If we resolve to waste the time we have the levers of government on some evidence-based policy, we won’t have the millions we need to get control of the government.

It’s not just politics. I just left a meeting where we discussed how this foundation that funds our office (we are a continuing ed program housed at a major research university) is going to start evaluating outcomes to see/measure if the tens of millions of dollars it gives away every year are doing anything like what they are supposed to be doing. This after only 70 years or so that the foundation has been in existence.

  8. DTM Says:

Bah, this study is chock full of evidence, and therefore this “case for evidence-based policy” is entirely circular.
