I’ve sort of been worrying for a while that Google’s plethora of excellent web-based services has actually made the world dangerously dependent on a single firm. What if something were to go wrong? This afternoon, for example, Gmail’s not working and the world’s a-Twitter with panic.

It’s happened before and the world didn’t end. Besides, the way people complain about how they never get a break from the electronic world, you’d think they’d welcome just such a shutdown once in a while.

Has Matthew been reading Final Crisis, or was that random luck when it came to picking a title?

Actually, I thought it was a reference to DC Comics’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” arc.

I love Gmail and I use it for most of my e-mail needs, but I’m not dumb enough to rely on it utterly and completely. I use my own domain names for e-mail and forward the mail on to my Gmail account. I also forward all mails to a general POP box that I download to my home PC hard drive every other day or so.
The smart thing is not to rely on any domain that you do not personally control, including AOL, Yahoo, Verizon, etc., as the point of contact for your e-mail inbox.

Too true! I take pride to being Master Of My Domain.

Since when did people start limiting themselves to only one email account? Given the glory days of pay-for-play email accounts is largely behind us, I reguarly use around 4-5 email accounts that I actively remember to check.

Have the gmail autoforward to a yahoo account. If there is a problem with the former, reply via the latter. Cheap and zero maintenance. If you’re paranoid, include the yahoo address in your gmail signature.

You do realize just how much commerce is dependent on a single firm known as the United States Postal Service?

I have been having these very thoughts, especially as I want to use Google Apps for a number of small non-profit organizations. Those that advocate using your own domain are missing the point in a big way. The very best email-hosting service you can get now is … Google Apps. Sure you can use other people for email hosting but it is horrid. The trend is towards more reliance on Google; the disruption of their systems melting down would not be minor.

Hey, Matt. I happen to be writing a book about this very concern:

If it follows the DC pattern, the collapse into a single email universe will only last a few years, and then some new maxi-series will break off a parallel universe where Google is evil, gets together with Microsoft, the two have a son who is a combination of Lex Luthor and Superman…
IT’S THE WORLD-CHANGING EVENT YOU CAN’T MISS!!
