Comment of the Day

I liked Luke’s VP announcement forecast: “He’s gonna drunk-text the nation around midnight. It’ll say ‘my vp pic is hak jfjdj’”

The kids’ll love it. Meanwhile, what’s with sending a text message to a large number of people? That’s so 2007 — don’t these guys know about Twitter?

Yes, but less of the public knows about Twitter.

  2. MaryLiz Says:

Hehe. Obama has been on Twitter for a while now: http://twitter.com/BarackObama

  3. Aleks Says:

Obama’s just not as cool as you, Matt.

  4. Chris Conway Says:

Barack Obama is the #1 most followed person on Twitter, with more than 62,000 followers. But the wider public is not going to acquire a Twitter login just for campaign trivia.

I’m wondering about the technology they use to do the SMS blast: will the message arrive at so many thousand phone numbers more-or-less simultaneously, or will it take a few minutes/hours?

  5. Chris Conway Says:

An interesting thing about Twitter is that the top 40 or so profiles are: Barack Obama, CNN, Stephen Colbert, and 37 Internet “celebrities” (e.g., Kevin Rose of Digg and Leo Laporte of TWiT). How long is going to be before a real celebrity starts Twittering?

Another reason not to pick the Clintons.

God, not another fucking Finnish VP.

  9. Jim Crozier Says:

He should announce his VP choice as being……..Michael Phelps!

Instant innoculation from any attacks on patriotism and there’s no way he can be the biggest celebrity in the world with Phelps standing right beside him, shirtless and flexing while roaring manfully with all eight gold medals draped around his neck.

  10. apostropher Says:

Harder to collect a bunch of phone numbers for future fundraising using Twitter.

  11. kidkostar Says:

So I was watching Obama talking about the characteristics his VP pick will have last night, and suddenly, it hit me. I knew who he was going to pick, and it’s going to be a doozy. It’s going to be a game changer, knock McCain for a loop, expand the Democratic Party by one, reinforce the Obama brand, undercut the people uncomfortable voting for a black man, and send the chattering classes into high ecstasy, so be ready to see this on your text message: Gen. Colin Powell. Hooyah.

  12. jb Says:

    whats twitter?

But that leaves McCain open to counter with Usain Bolt.

SMS is best effort: the messages will get there when they get there, so it’s very possible that Joe Blow in Dubuque will get the scoop before the media.

I hope they’ve negotiated a good discount with the providers, because the standard margin on consumer SMS is about 90%.

  15. Obama Says:

    I is in ur heds.

    Announcez wil b LOLcat, bichez!

  16. In the Provinces Says:

Forget Michael Phelps; Obama should go with Misty May-Traynor.

  17. hw Says:

Not to hijack a silly thread with a serious point, but my understanding is that the whole point of this SMS scheme is to harvest cellphone numbers for the GOTV effort.

  18. noplot Says:

jb–it’s the smaller speaker cone that handles high frequencies; the woofer handles the low ones.

Of course, I may not be the best resource, since I was tempted to ask for a rotary cellphone when I got mine (an event I remember like it was last month, perhaps because it was last month…

  19. Austen Says:

Oh god, it’s been three hours since I first read this and I still can’t stop laughing. Good work, Luke.

  20. RS Janes Says:

Now we know it’s Loose Lips Biden and, according to MSNBC in the wee hours of Saturday morning, the text message hadn’t gone out from the Obama camp yet. Whoops!
