Bill Kristol, Feminist

Kristol

Bill Kristol, well-known feminist, criticizes what he terms “the Democrats’ glass ceiling.” His implication is that sexism is the only possible motive for picking Joe Biden over Hillary Clinton and he wants to make mischief along these lines.

I’m glad to see Kristol’s newfound passion for these issues. I notice that, for example, The Weekly Standard doesn’t seem to have seen fit to comment at all on Lilly Ledbetter’s court case or the subsequent legislative effort it inspired. But maybe now that Clinton’s plight has tugged at his heartstrings Kristol will make sure that these kind of oversights don’t happen again. Right? I mean, it’s not possible that Kristol is anything other than sincere in raising this issue.

Really? This is all they’ve got?

Their fear is delicious to watch unfold.

  2. Joel Says:

People still read Bill Kristol? Who knew?

  3. pseudonymous in nc Says:

Without looking: name a female writer for the Weekly Standard.

  4. Trevor J Says:

Juan Williams (such as he is) called Kristol out on this on the Sunday talk show. Something to the effect of “you’re just trying to stir up trouble” and the smarmy prick grinned.

A Clinton holdout doesn’t need Kristol to stoke their resentment at this point. He’s wasting his breath.

    But, when isn’t he?

  5. gregor Says:

Kristol is being kind. He should have slammed Dems for beong racist, as they just chose a white male and not a black or a Latino for VP.

  6. MattF Says:

The conclusion I draw is that Kristol sees no actual issues that McCain can win on…

  7. professordarkheart Says:

I love the analogy between politics and the business world in this “glass ceiling” idea. Because it’s, like, totally natural to assume that the CEO would choose a deputy who had slammed his job performance in front of the board while they were considering whether to give him the top job, and who thinks that it’s his job to pay off the credit card bills she’s racked up on power suits and power lunches in the process of climbing the corporate ladder.

  8. Jake Says:

If there were a contest for the biggest douchebag who’s a political pundit, Kristol would win in a landslide.

I do wonder, however, if he puts articles up in the Weekly Standard that the editors at the NYT simply reject.

  9. David B. Says:

And, of course, had Obama chosen Clinton over Biden (and Kaine) it would have been irrefutable evidence of anti-Catholicism.

I eagerly await the column attacking McCain’s anti-semitism when Joe Lieberman is passed over.

  10. nukev Says:

The great debate is whether Kristol’s smirk grates more than W’s

  11. Frankie Says:

What i love most about Kristol’s piece is that in the 3 examples he gave as to why Obama should have picked Hillary over Biden, 2 of them proved unsuccessful. So of course Obama is sexist for not following that formula?

Kristol - what a putz. But you knew that.

  12. sure sure Says:

    Matt,

I have no idea if Kristol cares about feminism or not, but saying that he didn’t comment on one particular case at one particular site means he can’t be is pretty asinine, even for a harvard philosopher like you.

I couldn’t find your posts about Joe Arpaio’s roundups in Maricopa County, so I have to assume you back his positions and are probably a douchebag on immigration issues.

Not finding positive statements is not quite the same (or as honest or valid) as finding negative statements is it?

Well, why am I telling this to an immigration douchebag such as yourself?

    He doesn’t.

I have to nitpick this. Matt notes that the case isn’t mentioned anywhere in the Weekly Standard, which Kristol edits. For a journal that thinks of itself as the preeminent voice in national politics, not to have mentioned one of the most important civil rights cases of recent years is, I think, a significant omission.

Given the stuff that makes it onto the NYT op-ed page (note to subs: have a macro for ‘Correction Appended’) that’s the dirt beneath the barrel. Smirkin’ Bill is pure apparatchik.

  16. sure sure Says:

Professordarkheart, I stand corrected, although it is pretty clear using your same standards that Yglesias is still a Joe Arpaio loving douchebag.

I am not a civil liberties expert, but I am not sure that given the past seven years, most people would point to ledbetter as one of the most important civil rights cases of *recent* years. (It was certainly wrongly decided.)

  17. nenabeans Says:

If it had been in reverse, where Hillary didn’t pick Obama as her VP following a close primary, Kristol pistol would have pulled out the other pre-canned headline “Democrats problem with race.” It was a weak article, talk about coasting…

  18. Mike B Says:

    For once Kristol is right.

I have been shocked at the sexism and misognyny in the Democratic party.

I have read the most vile and misognynist comments about Senator Clinton in liberal blogs. It is worse than anything I would hear from Rush or O’Reilly.

The media in general declared open war on Mrs Clinton using the worst kind of sexism in an all out assault on her and there was no objection from the liberal bloggers or the DNC.

I can’t imagine something like this happening in the republican party. There would have been outraged if their party’s female candidate had been treated this way.

I now believe sexism and misogyny is more acceptable on the left than on the right. Conservatives would not have stood silent and watched their female candidate get gang raped by the media.

  19. Kevin Says:

How many McCain points did Mike B. get for that post?

  20. ronin Says:

Oh, our very own concern troll! How cute!

  21. nolaboyd Says:

Translation: I’ve read nothing vile or misogynist written by liberals who actually have names. (Possibly bc I wrote those anonymous comments myself so I could cite them here.)

  22. John Says:

Wow! William the Bloody Stupid caught acting, well, stupid again.

  23. Teddi Says:

Mike B. got it right and I’m not a troll. I am a woman of a certain age who watched in horror as Hillary was pillioried by both the MSM and liberal bloggers who chose to worship at the feet of the ONE without bothering to “vet” him.

  24. sergio Says:

I guess mike b likes getting sean hannitied by kristol without the crisco. you know what i mean. maybe kristol can use ann coulter’s face to wait off his hand afterward.

  25. James W Harris Says:

Kristol is a cheap second-generation knockoff handed a pundit career in the same way a self-made steel man’s middling son is handed a foundry. If he didn’t make himself useful to the far right, he’d have blown it long ago, since people only read him to have their prejudices confirmed. Kristol just spouts neocon talking points out of the manual, and uses his famous name to give them an “intellectual” gloss. It’s the right wing echo chamber.
