I have always been happy to be older than at least one state. Just by a bit: I was born on August 12, 1959 and Hawaii was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959. My birthday is actually the anniversary of the annexation of Hawaii: August 12, 1998. Kervick Fun Fact I.
he had no time for fancy numbers and counting. That’s one of the reasons we are supposed to elect him, I hear.
Much like kitchen tables, numbers are something that McCain DID NOT HAVE while he was a POW. He lived without numbers for five and a half years, and I think that goes a long way towards explaining why he cannot, now, tell you exactly how many numbers there are.
Okay, I’m officially ready for the long weekend to begin.
Dan Kervick, I’m rather younger than you but I’d remember if Hawai’i was annexed in 1998. Was it denounced as a ploy to distract from the Clinton impeachment?

I wasn’t really feeling the previous trash talking against Alaska. But there you go. Win.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Matt, I think you forgot how to count

I just read this on another site and was going to add it to the comments on your other pieces. Fantastic.

John McCain is 23 years older than the state of Alaska.
Yet, amazingly, he still has more hair than Matt Yglesias.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Alaska became a state in January 1959, making it 49 years old. McCain turned 72 today. 72 minus 49 is 23.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
And almost as old as the redwoods.

Part II? This is becoming the Pabst Blue Ribbon of partisanship. I hate Hipster irony.

Barack Obama received more votes in 29 primaries this year than Sarah Palin got running for Governor of Alaska in 2008.

D’oh! Yes, I think Hawaii was slammed a few cruise missiles during Operation Desert Fox.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
80,000 people were in attendance LIVE to watch Obama give an acceptance speech.
Only 114,000 people voted for Palin to be their governor.

He was actually about 22.34 years old since he was born at the end of August and Alaska became a state in January.
Common grounding rules say you’re wrong, Matt. RECTIFY IT!

That should of course be “rounding rules.” How silly of me.

Another fun fact:
Alaska has 1 area code.
Chicago has 7.
